When I bought my KZJ 70 it had 27,000 miles on the clock. It is now on 171,000 milles. Initially it was entirely standard, it was on road tyres and it would have weighed 1780 kgs and it could accelerate from 50-70 mph in 5th gear in 10 seconds. It now weighs 2000 kgs, it's on AT tyres and it was getting lethargic with a 50-70 sprint  Wink  Wink in around 15 seconds.

Time for a re-time Cool  Cool

Toyota will sell you a "Plunger Stroke Measuring Tool " for an amount above £150. It's possible to get one for nearer £100 but being tight *beep* I made my own. It is not a fulcrum design like the Toyota but a simple shaft in a body that has a dial gauge at the end. I measured the distances from the Toyota fulcrum point to each end and as they are identical, a straight design will work.

With the unit in place I checked the timing and found it to be 3 deg. retarded. Now that was the easy bit, as moving the pump requires considerable dexterity and knowledge of suitable expletives  Twisted Evil

But I persevered and reset the timing.

It made no difference to the tickover but the cruiser was immediately more responsive. I could pull down to 1400 rpm in 5th and pull away with far less vibration than I could previously from 1800 rpm. A hurried 50-70 on a slight uphill recorded 10.7 seconds.

So a success.

Update.

Fuel consumption on the last tank was 26mpg. This was basically all short journeys where I would have expected 24.5, so another plus.
