D4 should be a wide slot and you should be able to push the lever towards the D or the 4. If when you push it towards the 4 it pings back to the D the retention ball and spring for the gear lever has come off. It's pretty common unfortunately. There's a fella in Oz who sells replacements which are less likely to do this.

Google "120 prado shift lever repair kit" for the repair kit. Or "prado gear lever loose" for lots more info on that.

Think i can see what the confusion is Wolfy.

The D4 slot isn't one gear, if you slide the gearstick from P as normal the stick will (unless the round ended rod and spring mentioned above are worn) automatically slot into D.

Once in D position you will find the gearshift can be slotted over to the 4 position and stay there, and 4 will come up on the dash display, you are now in a drive but the vehicle won't go up into 5th, slot the gearlever back over the left and you'll see D come up on the dash, you now have 5th available too.

It isn't D4 as such, its D to the left and 4 to the right.
