Has anyone had the captive nuts for tow bar rust away in the chassis? If so how did you go about repairing this. The chassis is fine just not a lot of meat left o the nuts.

When you say "not a lot of meat left on the nuts", are you referring to the threads? If so have you cleaned the threads with a tap to check the state of them?

I agree with Roger. I think it was on this forum that I learnt the value of doing exactly that, and now (time permitting) I clean every captive nut or stud that I deal with on the car (and every nut and bolt I re-use). If the captive nut is past saving then I guess the only remedy is to drill out through the other side of the chassis leg and use a longer bolt...? There isn’t much left of the nuts. Was wondering if anyone has been able to grind the rest of the nut away then just but and bolt it. |

I wouldn't worry too much about the external corrosion on a captive nut, if that's what you mean - they generally suffer due to having been welded, but you try pull a bolt through one still!!!!!!!!
Clean wire brush it up and if accessible/enough thread - wind another nut on top maybe? - If it's the ones I am thinking of the main strain is sheer on the bolt, not direct pull?
BUT remember if this is for towing, make sure its right or add extra strength somewhere!! |

A couple of the threads weren't great on mine and I just tapped them and put a lock nut on the end of the bolt within the box section just in case. |
