Hi All,

I was considering running my 90 on 50:50 diesel to new vegetable oil (not used) and wondered if anyone had any experience of this?

I know some people have run 100% but I don't want to be installing heaters etc to run 100% plus I have heard horror stories of fuel pumps needing to be replaced, constant seal changes etc etc.

Thanks
Glyn

Not something I've tried on the Toyota though I had an unhappy fuel pump experience on a VW diesel back when veg oil could be got more cheaply than diesel. (This was back in the days of New Labour's hated fuel duty escalator, which ensured that petrol and diesel duty rose several percentage points ahead of inflation each year. Talk about hammering the people who you're supposed to represent! Hopefully Corbyn's new broom will sweep away such an anti-working class policy.)

The key thing, I remember, is the kind of fuel pump that you have. Some can cope with the extra thickness of the veg oil, some can't. I am 99% sure that there a load of old threads on here or the other place addressing this very point, and that the 1KZ-TE was ok... don't quote me though. Have a search and see.

I've tried bio diesel through mine - just one tank full - ran smooth and fine, did smell like a chip shop.

I just tried it before a service knowing I was going to be changing the fuel filter and had to do the tank pickup pipes anyway etc

It was arguably more powerful. I'm told though that it initially picks up any deposits left in the pipes/tank and drags them into the filters!

As for straight veg oil - I do have a fried runs his on it during the summer, works fine. he generally uses it on longer journeys where he can guarantee he is going to be diluting/mixing it by re-filling with normal diesel sooner. He hasn't reported any running problems so far.

My biggest concern is that if it does cause any problem, even things like changing the fuel filter more often, soon eat into the savings

I haven't paid attention but it seems that veg oil has come down in price again. There was a time when it was creeping close to the price of diesel, but now you can get Tesco rapeseed for 70p/litre (and I bet you could find cheaper elsewhere). The other money saving option is 'black diesel' of course.
