Hey everyone,

I've been a long time lurker and recently took the plunge and bought a 56 plate 2006 Invincible. I grew up on landcruisers in the Middle East, so bought it mostly for that and also wanted to upgrade from my RAV4 to a real SUV. But the fact is that I know next to nothing about these trucks and how to tell whether there's something about to go wrong or not. Which is where I kind of need help/advice.

I've had the truck for about 2 weeks and have already put 600+ miles on it (most of it because I bought it in England and drove it back to Edinburgh), and I've been loving every minute of it. Amazing trucks these. It had one previous owner from new who got it serviced religiously at Toyota.

But what I've noticed is that when cold, the engine makes a loud clattering noise which goes away after the engine warms up.

The only thing I've noticed is that on cold start the there's a white puff of smoke that comes out of the exhaust. When the engine is warm, on start there's no smoke at all.

Another thing is that when cold, on idle, there's a very subtle vibration (felt usually for a tiny amount of time when the engine brings the revs back up every so often). This is on idle, when I'm not hitting the accelerator pedal at all. While driving there's no vibration at all.

Sorry for the long post but these things have been bugging me a bit and making me paranoid with me thinking at every start "well *beep*! the engine is about to fail" or something like that.

So my question is, is this all expected or should I be worrying about a failing engine or something of the sort?

The other question is, does anyone here have some trustworthy mechanics in the Falkirk, Bathgate or Edinburgh area (or anywhere close by) they know about that I can take the car to to be inspected and fixed if anything needs fixing?

Nick

The first thing to do is find out if the injector seals have been changed, Toyota did an advisory/recall on them, and they should change them free of charge, loads of information on the forums about this.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your response. I was checking the service records and contacted Toyota to see if I was missing any records but it seems like even though the vehicle was serviced religiously there never was any work carried out to change the injector seals. Toyota said they won't be touching a car this old and that there was no campaign in place any longer.

Would I just take it to any mechanic to get these changed or does it have to be Toyota that carries out the job?

Injector seals affected a range of cars and yours could be in the range. You need to check to see if your VIN number is in the following ranges.

Model   Vin Range                                      Manufacture date
KDJ125 JTE AZ29J# 00019035-00050831 June,2004 Through October,2007
KDJ120 JTE BZ29J# 00049705-00160767 June,2004 Through October,2007

If it is you definitely want to get them done. If they are leaking you will quickly wreck the engine.

How many miles has the car done? The injectors last about 100K miles although plenty of people will soldier on with worn injectors. They do get clattery though, and there is a danger they can fail and drop bits in the engine which you really don't want. Recon injectors are about £130 each. New are about £270. When I changed mine I went from clattery when cold and lots of engine vibration when stopped in D (vibration went in N or P) to quiet and smooth.

In theory any old mechanic can do this. I did mine, as have a few people on this forum and others. It's not a difficult job but it takes time and you want to be clean and methodical, and every nut and bolt wants torquing up correctly when it goes back together. You'll also need Techstream (check e bay, about £20 with software) to reprogram the ECU for new injectors.

Personally, if I was paying someone to replace the seals and the car had more than 80K miles on it I'd get them to do the injectors at the same time. You have to take the injectors out to do the seals so the labour charge won't be any different. If you need new injectors next year it'll be all the labour charge again.

(Ok...trying this again, wouldn't allow links).

Thanks Sheepish.

My car falls within the range of VIN numbers you posted. And in all the service records I can't find any mention of injector seals or injectors replaced. To top it all off, the car has 190k miles on it (mostly all highway miles from trips to France). So it sounds like it is about time I got the injectors replaced.

As for doing it myself, I am not sure I could pull that off. I am pretty much a noob when it comes to mechanical stuff. I was planning on getting comfortable with doing stuff on my own with an oil change here and a filter change there. Heh.

Tomorrow I'm taking her to a mechanic in Glasgow to see what he thinks. He said he'll plug her to a computer and check the engine...I have to say I do not have much faith in him actually putting my fears/paranoia to rest.

I also made a couple of videos for you guys to judge whether my worries are well placed or completely out of order. Rewatching the videos actually make the engine sound even worse than I remember.

Here are the links to them. Please copy paste them in your browser as I can't paste actual hyperlinks:

UPDATE: Just looked through the records again and seems like the car went in for an Oil Strainer Recall. Looking that up here in the forums sounds like that was the recall/Customer Satisfaction campaign done to replace the injector seals. Wonder why in the world Toyota wasn't up front with me and said yes when I asked about the injector seals replacement. This was done at 90k miles, btw.

I would try taking it to another main dealer, they do try and wiggle out of doing jobs like this, and you never know they might do it, no harm in trying.

Oil strainer will have been the injector seals. The seals leaked fumes into the crankcase. The oil went thick and blocked the oil pickup strainer.

If your mechanic can read the injection feedback values (one value per injector) you want them to be less than +/-3. More than that and they want replacing.

Thanks Andy and Sheepish.

Took the car in today to a "diesel specialist". He checked the car, drove it around with the computer plugged in, put it through stress etc and says the injectors are perfect. Either I was being paranoid or the engine will collapse without warning. In either case, I do feel a bit better and I guess will be able to enjoy the car a bit more.

Injector test should be done from a full cold start.  So essentially left over night.  Plugged in and measured from the key being first turned.  Its how Toyota will do it.  If your mechanic measured it with warm injectors it could well still show in tolerance as its already warmed up.  One thing I will say they are not the quietest of engines even with a full shiny new set of injectors but typically they quieten down as soon as the oil starts to warm up.

Sorry for the late reply, was moving houses. It wasn't done from a full cold start but I realized later that I was being a bit paranoid. I'll take it in for a full service/check up soon. Hoping to find a decent Landcruiser mechanic in my area.

If you are still looking for peace of mind I can recommend Gwylm Coleman at this place which is not too far from you.  He is very knowledgeable about Land Cruisers and is a "proper" mechanic.

He will certainly know a copper seal from an alloy one!

You will find that the noise goes away just as the temperature reaches normal, in fact you can some times catch it doing it while driving. The timing is altered to speed up heating the cats, so its normal, mine has done this from the day we bought it....40k to the present 170k, so probably no need to worry.
