I am looking to get a 90 Series and know that the diesel engines are generally reliable but certain ones (the earlier models) have problems. Which engine model should I be avoiding? I cant find it anywhere and am starting to pull my hair out.
Thank you!! |

It's not as stark a contrast as you imply.
The early engine was the 1KZ-TE 3.0 indirect injection diesel (1996-2001?). It is a very good unit indeed and a pleasure to drive and own. Some have suffered cracked heads - the reason appears to be that the cooling system is only just good enough to keep it sufficiently cool, especially if you do heavy towing. Many owners make minor modifications to the cooling system (about which there are many, many threads here and elsewhere) to safeguard, but all that is probably needed is to keep the system in tip top condition. There are plenty of these engines around with 300000m+ They are definitely not made of chocolate.
The later engine is the d4d (1KD-FTV) common rail engine (2000?-2002). I don't know as much about these, but they are very reliable and economical to run, some owners find them noisy and less refined. They are also harder to find in 90s, and will be more expensive.
Another problem can affect the automatics (with both engines I think?), which is not unique to these vehicles. If the radiator is allowed to deteriorate then coolant can mix with ATF with potentially catastrophic consequences. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |
