Quick question - I replaced my lower ball joints ( camalot brand from roughtrax ) 6 months ago. they have rusted instantly, is this normal?

Response from roughtrax was :

the ball joints are supplied as pictured (my picture), they are a raw material unpainted, customers can paint them if they wish to do so however most will just fit them as they are.
The warranty covers the operation (mechanics) of the ball joint and not the cosmetics so any rusting wouldn’t be covered under warranty.

Is this correct?

Many Thanks

I've delivered brand new cars with similar rust on unpainted suspension parts, so few people ever look underneath their vehicles and have no idea what's happening.

Would probably have given them a lick of paint before fitting them (i also paint brake calipers and the unswept areas of brake discs/drums black, because i hate to see rust), no reason why you couldn't give them a vigorous wire brushing and a coat of something decent now, but even without painting i suspect they'll see the vehicle out.

I put reconditioned / sandblasted brake calipers on my cruiser and within a month or short space of time anyway, they were the same colour as your ball-joints, hasn't affected their performance though, they must be on it 2 / 3 years now so I wouldn't worry. Just paint them now if you wish.

Out of interest, did them ball-joints come with a grease nipple or a blank for you to fit a nipple if wanted to. I changed them on my yoke at different times, the first time I got a Blueprint one which had the grease nipple port so when the time came to replace the other side, I asked for a Blueprint one again to get the grease nipple feature only this time it wasn't present, which made me always suspect the 2nd Blueprint one wasn't genuine but maybe they changed the design  Question

Yes - un painted right by all the road salt etc, bound to rust in no time at all....

Just ignore or paint when you fit them...

If you want to make yours look pretty again, get some rust converter the stuff that makes it go black for a while and brush some on, but don't get anything too chemically onto the rubber boot.

Thanks for the feed back - looks like I will have to check the finish before fitting any think else - would have been a simple job if I had known before hand
