|

Whilst I continue to search for a decent worshop manual for my new aquisition (2005 LC4) there are jobs to be getting on with.
Under it yesterday and it's clear that the oil seal has failed where the forward facing drive shaft emerges from the transfer box. A line of oil across the chassis that has sprayed from the spinning shaft. So I have 2 questions - (1) is the replacement as straightforward as it looks? Drop the UJ off - remove a nut and then pull the yoke out to get at and remove the old seal? (2) What's the torque setting for the nut. OK - 3 questions. (3) what oil does the transfer box take?
The car only had 75k miles on it when I got it - and I've put 4k on it since in as many weeks. So far have repaced front brake pipes and drive shaft rubber boots - inner and outer - so I have a feeling its been stood for a while and not doing much. Most important, dspite the jobs - I love the thing to bits!
Any advice greatly appreciated. |

Before you get the spanners out make sure its not prop shaft grease that's spraying about as you should see grease spatter near all the UJ's if they have been serviced regularly. |

The output flange bolt goes to 118Nm. There is a lock nut you need to chisel into a groove on the shaft, so ideally a single-use item although I think I reused mine. There are two seals in there, one around the shaft and one in the flange. The line of oil does sound odd though. When my seal went on the back (not the front like yours, but same detail) there was oil *everywhere*. That said the rear seal is lower on the case so probably has more oil around it. Not seen a line of grease from my UJs, but maybe I don't put enough grease in or there is so much other much under there I don't notice it! |
