|
|
Hello...
Recently while climbing about under my 80, I gave the front propshaft a turn and noticed it would turn fully with all the wheels firmly on the ground....
Unless I'm missing some detail here, shouldn't it be connected to gears that would make that impossible?
I've heard of front diffs failing on these but wondered if there was some sort of jiggery pokery in that actuator bolted on the diff that has disengaged the drive....?
Any advice or enlightenment is greatly appreciated... |

I don't know about the 80 series but dose not have Locking hubs, also known as free wheeling hubs are fitted to some (mainly older) four-wheel drive vehicles, allowing the front wheels to rotate freely when disconnected (unlocked) from the front axle.? _________________ 2004 Amazon 100 series

Thanks for the reply!
It doesn't have free wheel hub locks. It's permanent 4wd. |

Are you sure it has not got them ? and
how do you know it is permanent 4wd,
how have you proved it ? _________________ 2004 Amazon 100 series

I've engaged the 4L on the transfer box on a track before and it seemed to work, although I've never seen all 4 wheels spinning....
There definitely no locks on the wheels, I know what they look like and mine just have the dust caps over the hub end. |

OK, As I am not a expert but going on your symptoms, it is the only thing I can think could cause the problem.
Has the 80 got a centre diff lock ? _________________ 2004 Amazon 100 series

I think it does have the centre diff lock, but that said, the propahaft downstream of it should be engaged with the crown wheel... I'm sort of dreading opening it all up and finding a mass of empty spaces where once many teeth existed |

Likely culprit would be drive shaft to hub flange. Remove each cap and look for bits of metal.

Due to the nature of drive taking the path of least resistance, if a driveshaft has broken then the only way to drive the vehicle would be with the centre diff locked. Is this a manual and when you turned the prop the gearbox was in neutral or is this an auto in which case should have been in park which would stop the prop turning. Even with no drive shafts you should not be able to turn the props in gear or park.
Kind regards
