Hi everyone,

So I've recently been playing around with this little cable I got to connect to the computer and taking some random readings.

Yesterday I took a reading of the injectors when the engine was hot and today I did the same when the engine was cold.

I gotta be honest, I don't understand much of it but from what I'm reading on the internet, my injector feedback values and injector volumes are out of whack.

Posting the photos on Imgur (apologies for the quality of photos, took them using my phone camera, rather than a screenshot). Hoping to get some insights as to what I'm looking at before taking her in to see a diesel specialist.

Here's the link: https://imgur.com/a/u7wdezK

If info is missing, let me know what would help in diagnosing it further and I'll upload that as well. Smile

The main numbers to look at when the coolant temp is 83 Centigrade and the engine at idle with all electrics switched off and in park if its a auto trans or neutral if a manual box the main  numbers should be,
calculate load 10 percent any thing up to 16 is OK from 17 its time to start thinking about new injectors ,
injection volume ,new injectors 5 to 6 up to 8 is still very good must be under 12 to be good ,
main injection period 500 to 650 up to 700 above 750  not good ,
feedback value plus or minus 3 above that not good.

Thanks Tony.

From the figures you shared, it seems my injectors, at least 2 of them, are on the way out. Calculate load was at 33% when hot. I'll take another reading but it does look like a huge expense is on the way.

Sad

Took the reading once again:

Coolant temp: 86 C
Calculate load: 23%
Injection vol: 11
Main Injection period: 780
Injection Feedback Val # 1: 1.0
Injection Feedback Val # 2: -4.7
Injection Feedback Val # 3: 2.9
Injection Feedback Val # 4: 0.4

Taking the car in on Monday to be diagnosed by a specialist. Pretty sure I'll be needing new injectors.

Thanks for the reference values, Tony.

Injectors usually last between 120 to 150k miles and /or up to 15 years before they start showing they are worn out , so if you have done more miles than that your injectors have lasted well , if you are not doing the job your self make sure its done by a reputable injector place as cleanliness and preparation are the upmost importance for long lasting injectors and for the price difference get new denso replacements rather than reconditioned ,

Took the car to the specialist. Within 2 minutes he says the injectors are long past due for a replacement.

He said he wasn't sure if he could source new Denso injectors or reconditioned ones. He'll let me know next week.

Car has 196k miles on it, 90% of that is from regular trips from England to France, so all highway miles, but of course it still has wear and tear on the injectors.

I tried reply to your comment naming a company that your specialist can obtain genuine toyota (Denso) injectors from at trade prices but this site refused to allow it .

Hi did you get any signs from the car, as I think mine are on the way out, and due to covid19, can't really get to a specialist, and don't have time, me and the wife are "key workers", mines recently on cold start has a ticking noise and it's vibrating alittle more then normal

Hi 2toyotas:

Some of the telltale signs were:
Somewhat terrible mileage.
The knocking was louder than before.
Black plume of smoke on higher revs.
Injector misfiring.

After that I bought one of those diagnostic tools and the readings were terrible so decided to take it to a specialist.

Some garages and specialists are still open as they are deemed essential. I'd give one a phone call just in case and see if you can arrange something. Sometimes they can just tell by listening to the way the engine sounds if there's something messed up with the injectors so if you don't want to take the car in, ask them if you can send them a video.
