Hi Adrian

That's why we have this web site!!

The dealers have a job to do - and that's to sell new cars. I am sure that if they weren't forced to by their customers they wouldn't offer any support after the car was a few months old. Their sky high charge rates for labour and prices for a  lot of the parts just convinces me that they don't want 'old' customers. If the car wasn't made last week, they only offer minimal support.

There are exceptions and they are the ones worth knowing about but if you look at the forum where garages and servicing agents are described there are very few good words regarding main dealers. When I go to my local Toyota shops, I see a lot of glitzy fixtures and fittings but ask about anything technical and you get a glassy eyed stare.

I think the current crisis in the car trade (GM, Chrysler etc.) will see a lot of dealers closing. A lot of people will lose their jobs. That's sad as many of them (as individuals) have done their best and tried to offer a service. I don't blame them for their predicaments. They are victims not criminals. However, I would prefer to see a garage 'industry' run more like you mechanic friend; a specialist with real knowledge offering a valuable service.  I don't care if it is based in a farmyard with a muddy track provided the service is what it should be.

I could continue about how cars are too complex, too heavy (weight = cost) and should last much longer than they do (with a few honorable exceptions, of course!), but I won't.

By the way, I was an apprentice for 5 years with one of the UK's car makers who has now virtually disappeared so I have (or perhaps it would be fairer to say had) an active interest in cars and their place in our lives. Back in 1970 I had my doubts about the way the business was operated and the value of its products so I moved on. It's a double shame really because if you look at the racing car industry (Mclaren, Lola, Williams, etc.) it is lead by UK companies and most of the single seat sports cars used in the world are made here. So we still have a core of talent and expertise in this area if it could only be encouraged. Instead, almost all the real engineering related to mass produced cars is done outside this country and we are left with some of the assembly work in order to claim that the cars are made inside the EU.

Sorry about the rant

Willy

Hi I have been watching this post for a while the reason I also have a 4.7 on LPG which is also showing the same symptoms
stalling, poor idling, poor starting, I have eliminated all the suggested fixes yet the problem still exist, Toyota dealer has got no idea though they suggested throttle body assembly which includes tps, throttle motor and accelerator peddle position sensor which would point to it being throttle control fault as suggested,
Hope your guy gets to the bottom of it as i am sure it would help many people!

PostPosted: Tue Mar 16, 2010 15:11    Post subject: V8 Petrol Misfire, but not on LPG Reply with quote

Hi
Read this post with  great deal of interest.  Just picked up a misfire (fairly bad) on what is definitely like more than one cylinder!  Only difference with me is that the car runs perfectly once its warmed up sufficiently to switch to LPG.  This seems to rule out a mechanical failure?

There are some great suggestions on next steps here, which me and my friendly local mechanic will attempt to follow and report back, but wondered if the expertise that clearly exists here might offer any thoughts on the "horrible on petrol, lovely on LPG" dilemma!!?  BTW, if you switch to petrol at any time, it immediately starts missing; switch back to LPG, fine and dandy!

My thinking is
- a sensor gone kablooey
- leaking air pathways on the petrol side somewhere
- petrol pump on the way out
- mix screwy by some other way

Unless the LPG smooth running is just a passing fad, I'm very confused!  The only other symptom is that it occasionally takes a fair amount of starting from warm (the auto cranking ignition turns it over a lot before it catches, but it always does).

The car is a 100 series Kakadu Aussie import (we brought back), converted in the UK and using a Flashlube system.

Thanks for the pointers so far and look forward to (a) hearing from you guys and (b) posting a solution!

Phil

Hi,

Could it also be dodgy petrol injector(s)?

Peter.

My problem was solved so it's right I should return to tell the tale.

After dismissing all the regular text book stuff coming from the dealer, it went to a local skilled mechanic.

He found that all the gaps were wrong on the valves, many were completely closed. Possibly due to a small amount of recession but not enough to bother the engine as far as compression was concerned.

So that done, all misfires have gone and the car is running well on on LPG. Fuel consumption has been reduced too.

Now I just have to find out why it doesn't start when luke warm.

If things were perfect we'd have nothing to write about.

Get in touch with me if you have had similar problems and need advice from the mechanic.

Hi I am having the same problem with my lc100 I have had, plugs, leads, coil packs, manifolds, both cats, both pre lambda sensors, cam belt, main engine temp sensor.
Toyota want to rebuild the top end, my next call was the valve clearences and now from this thread I will have the spark plug gaps adjusted
I put some bg moa wynns hydraulic tappet addative and bg cf5 and bg 44 through the fuel system, the hesitation has now gone on set off, but runs lumpy on idle sometimes worse than other times where it almost seems to run perfect, loss of power is intermittent too.
So I shall have the pugs re gapped and the valve clearance checked
Cheers
