Hi Andy,
The fluid is very clean maybe too clean a very light brown colour surely it should be a red/pink colour? i have now found out that it goes into reverse when cold but when warm there is no reverse if you let it cool slightly reverse is back again i can't check the fluid at the moment as its on my drive which is quite an incline _________________ Cheers,

Yes it should be red/pink colour, so might need a flush out, look on here for the correct way to do it, also you might need to read about how to check the level is correct. _________________ It's Not a Bl**dy Jeep it's a Landcruiser

I try to use the Comma oil website, and from memory they advise AQM for the gearbox, also you do know that oil is read when hot with the engine running. _________________ It's Not a Bl**dy Jeep it's a Landcruiser

Hi, routine for those not familiar with autoboxes:
Checking the level with the ATF hot is required on many 'boxes, due to the multitude of chambers and oilways
in an autobox - a minimum amount of fluid should be present in all chambers, which then quickly fill up to effect changes when that gear is selected. Standard procedure: 10-15 mile run, fluid will be guaranteed to be at, and maintain, running temperature.
Park on level ground, select each gear from Park to Low, deliberately, so that fluid is present in each pot which controls that gear.
Then return up the box, steadily, one slot at a time, to Park. Leave in Park, engine running.
Ensure handbrake set, pop bonnet, remove and wipe clean autobox dipstick. Reinsert, pause, remove and check level.
This should be in the top quadrant as marked 'hot'. About 1/2 l raises from lower hot to top hot mark.
Try not to overfill, the excess fluid creates a hot foam causing partial changes to occur, this skipping damages the 'box more than a slightly low level will do.
Bob Murphy on here detailed selector rod fixes to cure mechanical mis-selection problems, a search may locate them.
Hth

An update i added Lucas transmission fix to the gearbox and well it does seem to have fixed it ie no more slipping in reverse hot or cold i am a little sceptical about these magic fixes but on the advice of my auto transmission expert to try this first it actually seems to have worked for how long we shall see so a happy chappie at the moment and its really good to be back _________________ Cheers,

Interested to know how your getting on with the gearbox? Is it still ok after putting the Lucas transmission fluid in? |
