|
|
Hi All My 1997 SWB Colorado needs a new set of tyres. I'm on my second set of Dunlop SP Qualifiers 215/80/16 which I have been happy with and find they wear very well. The problem I have is that this size of tyre seems to be unavailable now so looks like I may have to get 215/70's My question is will this affect anything being slightly smaller like the speedo calibration or revs? Also anybody any preferences out there if I have to move from Dunlops? I have had yocohomas in the past but found they wore very quickly. I have seen on here BFG's are popular but, I hate to admit, I don't do any off roading. Just looking for good quality road tyres but more concerned what the effects of moving to a 215/70 will have. Thanks Richard |

You are proposing to fit a smaller tyre (i.e. less diameter).
This will alter the speedo reading but only very slightly. When your speedo reads 30mph you will actually be doing slightly less (28.4mph), or 60mph (56.7). Technically they will use less fuel but in the real world you won't ever notice it.

I've just done a quick Google though and there appears to be plenty of 215/80/16s out there?
I can't advise on road tyres really. Anything branded will be much of a muchness. If you wanted something capable of occasional off road use, most people report that BFG A/Ts are excellent on the road so there wouldn't be any drawback from fitting them even if you never ventured off road at all. And they have a reputation for lasting forever. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |

Thanks Diggerdave sorry for the late reply. I made a mistake on my post in that the tyres most have are the 265/70/16 and I was thinking of changing to these. Mine are 215/80/16 at the moment. You are right there are a few tyre manufactures out there that still make this size so I think I will have to change brands and stick with this size

Just replaced my tyres and put Goodyear AT adventure 265 70 16, I haven't had new tyres for about 8 years these are very quiet and I can really notice the difference in fuel and in the wet. I had grabber generals At on before. 265 75 16 |

So an internet search of my original size of 215/80/16 shows some available but been down to my preferred fitter and apparently none this size are available. My car is a SWB fitted with the OZ alloys. If I have to go with the more standard 265/70/16 will this make much difference in the drive being 50mm wider? Does anybody know if the 265's were an option from new on the OZ wheels please. Any advice on the tyres fitted to OZ wheels would be appreciated please as I'm reluctant to change tyre size without being fully informed of any likely changes or problems I may encounter especially as its going to be about £500
Thanks Richard |
