OK, Here's one for you all, i've got a 1983 4Litre Landcruiser and it's poorly, here's the symptoms : it developed a tapping noise which I figured was just a rocker arm in need of adjustment but about 200 miles later it turned, very suddenly, into a fairly loud knock. Fortunately I was close to home so I limped it back. The knock sounds as though it is coming from the front, top half of the engine. After advice from mates I have tried the following : had the injecters recon'd, dropped the sump off and checked the big ends (all OK ) whilst in there with the con rods off the crank I checked the little end play (as best you can!) and allthough its a bit tricky to tell if there is any play at all, all six seemed the same, then with the con rods back on the crank I removed the rocker arm shaft (and the glowplugs, so no compression) and turned it over on the starter, hey presto, no knock. Now I removed the first four (from the front) push rods and lifters, no damage or excessive wear on these, so these were put back along with the rocker shaft but the glowplugs left out and the engine turned again, waddya no, the knock is back. So now I know it's not compression related, then it got cold and dark and I gave up for the day, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers, Stu

Stu, you haven't sold this car have you? because I've just recently bought one with the very same complaint. The head was off when I bought it, take into account that it was very cheap I hasten to add. the head had a new combustion chamber fitted because it was rattling around. Now I've built it up it knocks like a DI Tranny van and smokes like hell so it may well be over fueling, please let me know of your findings so that we might compare.

Hi Marcus, Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay, I managed to blag some free workshop space so I had to tow the old girl in. I took the head off last night and it seems we have the same problem as I found a loose combustion chamber, it looked like it had been loose for quite a while and the very slight movement had gradually worn the head gasket away, allowing it to drop enough for the piston to hit it. This caused the knock but in the process chipped a half inch lump of the piston ( nothing is ever straightforward!! ) So now I need a piston but i`ve been told they come in sets of six, so i`m gonna do some ringing around. If you should decide to sell yours, let me know! Stu

Hi Stu, My combustion chambers have been welded in and machined off, I have also lost a chunk of piston but I don't think it will bother it much, I will now look at my injectors, and then take it all to bits again, I will post my findings over the weekend

Marcus, just a quick note, I thought this might help. I`ve found a place that specialises in Jap engine bits & they were prepared to sell me just 1 piston, 31 quid each, with rings, p&p & VAT it came to £58 in total, which I thought was pretty good. Company is SMS, phone number is 08003287110, guys name is Lewis. Good luck over the weekend. Stu

Well, well, well stu, with some buggering about making injectors up from spare Nissan bit's my old crate is now running quite sweetly with it's chunk missing out of one of it's pistons. Mind you it's not perfect but if it's very good for very cheap who cares?
How good is it ??
Well it 0-60 in 13secs and tops out at 85mph, mine is an automatic with no turbo, is yours any better ?
Keep in touch,
