Red Ken was going to restrict or increase charges for vehicles coming into London which did not meet Euro 4 (or 5 - I forget the details). This meant that many lorries and vans would either have to pay a much heavier congestion charge to enter the central part or be replaced by less polluting vehicles.

As he is away with the fairies now (and we have mad Boris instead), I don't think these charges will be enforced.

However, it does show how the 'greeness' of our cars is going to impact our driving in the future. It's always just been a tick in the box and a bit more complexity under the bonnet but from now it will prevent or at least discourage travel unless you have a hydrogen burning fuel-cell-mobile.

As a fairly non-political mechanical engineering type person it all seemed a bit unfair but I suppose to any vegetarian cyclist living in Mayfair, it must really be an important issue.

Its just too expensive to drive in UK,

so I moved out !

Would you believe that diesel is cheaper in Norway than in UK,
Yet Norway is most expensive country in the world.

It's cheaper here in Sweden too. Plus you don't use as much, as 99% of the time the car is actually moving at the speed limit, not sat intraffic looking at someone elses tailpipe.

It's funny (peculiar) though that the people who are suffering most at present are the dear old Americans. There fuel price has gone up over $4/gallon recently and now it's back down to $3. OK, so these are US gallons and at $4 it would seem dirt cheap to us here in Europe. However, the shock of a change on this scale has resulted in a big reduction in car use. I read that in June their year-on-year mileage had dropped by 2.7% or about 2 billion (yes that's billion ) miles over the month.

What worries me is that if fuel prices stay up then the cost of everything else will soon go up as well by about the same amount. In the short term, it's just the energy/transport component of the manufacturing cost but after a year or so it's all the other parts as well. So the cost of everything goes up the same way as the oil. Well, that's what happened in the mid 70's and again in the late 80's.

Hang on to your car 'cause they're going to be worth a fortune when the cost of a new one goes through the roof!

Willy
