OK, so this isn't a rerun of the discussion on whether petrol engines are better than diesel.  it's more a discussion on what sort of idiot I am.

I went to my local Sainsburys jjust before lunch to do a bit of shopping. On the way out I decided to top up the diesel as I may have to do a long trip in the next few days and didn't want to have to worry about fuel before setting off. So, I turned in at the Sainsburys garage and filled up - or started to. I put about 27 litres of petrol into my fuel tank before realising that it needs diesel. The tank had about 50 litres of diesel in it to start with so the loss of fuel was considerable.

The nice RAC man who came to my rescue couldn't take my car - too heavy - to a garage which could fix the problem so he just pulled it off the forecourt into a parking bay. Instead he contacted a company specialising in removing contaminated fuel. This guy (also very nice and helpful) arrived at 3pm. He drained the fuel tank into a little container and used the pump in his van to suck the fuel into a holding tank. He then used his pump to suck out the fuel in the pipe to the fuel filter by the engine. He supplied 10 litres of clean fuel and checked that the engine was running OK.

Downside; - he charged £180 for his service and the 10L diesel. I then had to buy more fuel to get back on the road (the 10litres didn't register on the fuel gauge!). So, this little entertainment cost me best part of £270.

The only good bit of knowledge is that there are helpful companies out there who can sort you out in only a couple of hours, the 100 series Land Cruiser has a drain plug in the fuel tank (it looks like a standard sump plug) and the tank holds 95 litres empty to full rather than 90 litres (OK, some of it went into the fuel line to the filter).

At the end of the process the nice man suggested I could probably have driven home on the fuel mixture without killing the engine!

One small point; if you buy fuel at Sainsburys - watch out, The diesel hoses are yellow rather than black. I know it says 'Diesel' on the pump but if you are a brainless idiot like me that may not be enough!

In addition to the above, a couple of months or so ago I pulled into a fuel station to fill up with diesel, in a hurry I might add. The pump had 1 petrol and two diesel hoses, looking at the wording diesel and something like super diesel I picked up the diesel put in approx £40 worth and went to pay, on looking at the receipt I noted that the price per litre was £1.54 odd, I question the attendant who said I has used the more expensive diesel - I went  ballistic, basically they trick you with the wording - I complanined to their head office and after exchanging 5 or 6 letters they gave me a voucher for the difference in price between the normal and super diesel.
I will never use this brand of fuel out of cjhoice again.

Theres a Shell garage near me that some pumps have normal diesel and some have the more expensive stuff on seperate pumps, I don't normaly use this station and filled up with the expensive stuff at the time of the rising fuel prices and it was only on my return to the car that I noticed the cheaper diesel pumps.

Did the better stuff improve the car in any way; lower fuel consumption/more power/quieter engine?
