My son is going to be working in the UK for a couple of years and would like to bring his US Gas 80 with him.  Our only concern is service.  Any ideas on getting something fixed on an 1996 80 series with ARB Bull Bar front bumper, gas straight 6, solid axles lockers etc.....  Any mechanic recommendations would be welcome he would be about two hours north of London.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum. Where north of London? If it's the east side of the country try Footloose 4x4 in Peterborough. If it's west side, try Julian Voelecker. They're both 80 series experts

Petrol 80's are less common than diesels in the UK but they're by no means rare so he shouldn't have any real problems finding parts or getting service. It might be cheaper to just buy a right hand drive petrol 80 over here than ship his own though? The petrols tend to be less popular than the diesels and can be bought a bit cheaper. Have a look on e bay to check current prices or autotrader.co.uk (you'll need to borrow a post code for autotrader - DY9 0YE is in the midlands). Just a thought.

I know that this is not an answer to the question you asked but your son may get a shock when he buys petrol (gas) over here.

We are currently paying about £0.85 per litre which may not mean a lot. If you aren't familiar with litres, the conversion factor is roughly 4 litres = 1 US gallon. So a US gallon of petrol is going to cost you around £3.40.

Currently, with the exchange rate at $1.50 - £1.00, converting that to dollars gives a cost of $3.40 X 1.5 = $5.10/gallon. That's a rough figure just to put you in the picture.

I hope my sums are correct but these figures should give you an idea of the sort of costs involved in travel here. Similar costs apply in most of the rest of Europe as well.

With that cost in mind, he might want to leave his 80 there and just buy or rent a small car here for the time he is in the UK.

Willy

PS the American gallon is roughly 4 litres while the English gallon is about 4.5 litres, 10% bigger. It's not a big difference but it is enough to make a difference when calculating costs and fuel consumption.
