Roomies Hi - can anyone help ?? Rolling Eyes

I've a '96 bi-fuel ( lpg converted ) 4.5 VX Auto. Obviously the spare wheel area has been replaced with the gas tank. I've seen pics of 'cruisers with a spare wheel bracket mounted on the rear doors - that swings away to allow the tailgate to drop.

Does anyone know where these can be sourced from ... or have you seen them being used ?
The only other option is to run with tyre weld .... which the gas convertor recommended - but being an old traditionalist at heart Razz

- I like the comfort of a spare .... any views ?

I recall seeing these on a website for 4x4 parts - try doing a web search. Trouble is, this was about 6 months ago. Try the links from this site, and form other 4x4 sites. Sorry I can't be more help.

I've thought about it, but so far I've not bothered. I just carry the spare in the boot on long journeys!

The problem in fitting a spare wheel carrier would be that you would also need to reinforce the panels where it bolts to,you would need to remove the panels inside and then weld plates on the inside of the pillar.

I have seen a setup in Aus that is fixed to an after market bumper,but do not know who makes it.

I own a 92 j spec which has the spare mounted on the rear. Don`t know why as there is nothing underneath the car Confused

Its not worth trying to retrofit a OEM Toyota rear swing out carrier to your TLC. The reinforced body only was made for Asia/Africia. If its not fitted as std then trying to get extra reinforced welds put in is goona be expensive and not worth the effort. Also ordered the parts (carrier) from Toyota is approx GBP1500-2000 (I know as I requested quote (had parts #'s)) and woild take over1-2 months to get into UK from Japan.

Better option is to get a rear numper (nearly all Aussie made) from TJM, ARB, Kaymar (USA only - Slee, Hanna) ordered that can also have a rear swing out carrier (on some even allow two for expedition trips).
That will give you rear protection for 4wheeling (if planning any - otherwise get tow hitch). Prices will run GBP 1000+.
Are some dealers in UK that supply those.

Other (and cheaper) option is to get someone to weld up a rear carrier. I got one done for mine (LPG tanks underneath as well) for GBP150 (at a local 'farmer' fabricator). Its not fancy but has done its job for 6+ yrs. They bolted on a support to the rear frame. I can send pics if u like (also checkout ih8mud, birfield.com and 80scool sites online as u'll find a lot of info on the subject)

Lal now in Colorado but got plenty of rust on my 80 from Scotland :)
