I have just invested in a memory map system that i have down loaded to my net book.
I cant get the GPS system to work, the Dongle appears to be working, but i keep getting "GPS cant open COM port"
Can anyone help.

Check that the com port is enabled on your firewall. Also check that the security system you are using allows traffic on this device / software mix (sometimes they don't). You can disconnect from the 'net then pause your anti-virus software and try again (weird, I know - I have to do this to download my dive data from my dive computer ) If it's a USB port check you get connectivity with another device and if it's a 'proper' com port (i.e. old style RS-232 9-pin) check it's supported still.

If you have a look at the software configuration (usually from the 'File' menu tab but may be under 'Tools') you probably have the option of selecting COM1 or COM3. I use similar software with a Garmin Etrex GPS which uses a COM port link rather than a USB link.
If your GPS 'mouse' uses one of the COM ports, just try changing the number. I and 3 are the most frequently used but it could be 2 or 4. Other numbers are possible but unlikely.
Out of interest, what is the software you are using? I use a very simple program called 'G7 to Win' to download track and waypoints and a much more sophisticated program called OziExplorer which handles maps and loads of other stuff. This can use the commercial maps like Memory Map but can also handle JPG images of maps which you configure with a few known locations so it's good for off-road trips where comercial maps aren't available. As its name suggests, it is used by the Australians for there outback trips.
Good luck with the COM ports.
