|
Has anyone fitted an intercooler to there cruiser looking at doing this in the near future.
Looking at the inletmanifold ill need to make an adaptor of some sort to fit the hoses on. The cooler will be mounted at the front of the rad a fairly large one. Would i be wasting my time doing this or will it give me added power ect?
I am also making an exhaust system for it too as ive only owned it a week and have just about ripped it of offroading! Was looking at a 3" straight through system to make it flow better is this a to large diameter ? It will be a stainless system lomsterbacked where it needs to be and of cause well out of the way.
any info or advise appreciated cheers simon. |

Julian Voelcker has added an intercooler to his 80 with good results - I am sure he'll add his views when he's next on the forum!
I believe he used the Allisport intercooler - not sure what you're proposing to do? Fab one up yourself or buy one designed for the 1HD?
People have reported power gains using bigger exhausts, so chances are you'll see some improvement! Good luck and let us know how it goes!

you will get a slight power increase better fuel eco and pro long the life of your turbo well worth doing i think
and a free,er flowing exhaust will help spoole the turbo quiker _________________ regards steve

Any downside to this? Don't want to sounding like a Saxo but my biggest gripe with my 120 is the manual gearbox and turbo lag. If you caught in the wrong gear / rpm, the engine is dead and turbo seems to take an age to spool. _________________ Cheers,

Suspect best benefit for you is a plug-in power chip - a decent one (the TTE Toyota one is on my wish-list but too expensive - almost a grand). Spider seem to do a good one, as do Steinbauer (TBR)

The TTE one is excellent - Toyota Motorsport development, warrantied by Mr T. The proven gains are there ... but it is expensive. Used on the Dakar motors I heard ...
I would never go for the flea-bay 'specials' though. I might as well magnetise my fuel _________________ I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.

cheers guys ill probly go ahead with the cooler and exhaust had a chat with a thew people now and sounds the best plan. The chip idea did go through my head but its just another thing to go wrong in deep water and its probly going to be cheaper for me to do the cooler and zaust. Plus i need to make an exhaust anyway!may look at a chip later on if i need morrre power. Might get it on a dyno before and after to see how much you can get with the mods aswell.

You can't chip an 80 series diesel anyway, it's all mechanical controls so there's nothing to chip The only thing I've got against front mount intercoolers is if you like bog snorkeling as LC puts it you're going to have cooling problems because it will be even harder to clean the radiator fins. But if bog snorkeling isn't your thing then that shouldn't be a problem. Once the intercooler is on you'll need to raise your turbo boost and tweak the pump settings to make it go properly which is where having it installed for you might pay. _________________ Jon m0zxj

I drove Julian's last week.
Not sure about how much more torque / power it has but it is a fast, fast truck. Makes a standard truck feel sedate in comparison. _________________ HDJ80, BFG AT's, grooved discs, OME 850/860's |

HI Kerbsty
I don't think you are an 80 but it sounds like your truck definitely is. _________________ HDJ80, BFG AT's, grooved discs, OME 850/860's |
