So what do people make of the 200 series Land Cruiser?

It looks pretty lavish to me.

Are the offroad capabilites as good/better than the 80 and 100 series?

I notice there is no forum for them on here, so are they not recognised by the good people of TLOC?

This is what i thought - they look incredible and very capable.

That diesel engine must be the shizzle with 280bhp1

Has anyone driven one?

Am I wrong in thinking that the 200 is being criticised for the engine and a twin turbo is being mooted - or is that just me confusing it with the 150?

AFAIK there are only 450 RHD ones in the country - that's all Toyota were allowed to release due to emissions rules.  Seems strange to me if that's the case.

I have driven 2 in West Africa - they already are twin turbo, but yes the 150 IMHO is underpowered for a vehicle in that class...  The 200 is a very impressive machine, no doubt (the ones I have driven are slightly detuned in order not to shred their manual g/boxes).  Still very powerful though.  Composed on shocking roads and very smooth.  I didn't have the cheek to take them properly off road - no doubt they are brilliant.  But not for me - even the basic spec "africa" one belonging to WWF that I had was an electronic overkill - start buttons etc etc etc.  When it goes wrong/gets old  Rolling Eyes

Hello, We have owned the new 200 series V8 since August last year and It is like chalk to cheese compared with our old Amazon.
Fuel consumption is better too if you don't hammer It, but thats not why you buy them.
Drop the windows, turn the stereo off, hit the power button and FLOOR IT!!!

A few of us had a test drive of one round a field at one of the ELCO events at Lincomb farm, seemed like a very nice motor.

There was a short clip of a 200 Series last night on the Dakar Rally. It nosedived into some sand, but just kept going and there was a fair bit if disbelieving comments from the comentator as to how there was no damage and how it jst seemed to shrug it off. I also think he mentioned it was in the lead in the standard production class.

I'm hopeful it will live up to the name that has been built over decades.

It needs to continue the legend.

It is interesting to see where Toyota is going with its thinking on these cars.

Reading about the 200 on the LCOOL web site was interesting in that our Australian friends expect a lot from their LCs and seemed disappointed by a few persistent problems:-

high initial oil consumption (+/- 500miles per litre of oil)

the automatic transmission not working well and requiring reprogramming

noisy drive shafts (clonking) requiring their replacement

tyre choice being limited by the standard wheel size

Given the complexity of the car and the combination of new body and (diesel) engine I suppose a few hiccups are permissible. I would hope that Toyota have tackled them with some vigour to avoid long term damage to the car's reputation.

The 200's 4x4 system seems to depend on the sort of ABS/traction control approach rather than 'old-fashioned' diff locks. I suppose that this is also to be expected and there will probably be specialists producing air lockers in the near future if you prefer a manual control of the transmission. However, comments on the system were very positive so it is probably worth keeping.

I doubt I will see one on my front drive so this is all a bit academic. There are certainly nice aspects like the new engine but all that electronic kit worries me. I suppose the good news is that Toyota are also doing a de-rated version of the V8 diesel in one of the simpler, more rugged models. One of the 70 series I think. It doesn't have the twin turbos but still produces a lot of power. Again, it is unlikely to be seen in the UK unless something strange happens at Toyota HQ.

As with all new models, the manufacturer trumpets the new whizzy electronic aids as some kind of step forward.  You can buy a 2010 Ford Mustang whose major selling point is that you can choose between 13 colours of dashboard lights, and adjust them at the traffic lights.  WTF?

Toyota seem to feel that the UK market for LandCruisers is in the same postion.  You get 'top of the range' 200s and and 150s, but no 70s.  Take a look at http://toyota.com.sa/en/Index.asp to see the lower-specced models that are available.  There's about 6RSR to a pound, BTW.

Cheers

Paul

Rolling Eyes  Anyone know anyone who knows someone who has been 'market researched' as to what they look for in a Land Cruiser - i.e product development research or whatever its called ... or is it done some other way?   Confused   How do they know what we want?
