|
|
Anyone have a recommended garage in the Surrey area that specialises in 4x4s/Toyotas. Rear diff gone and it can be very messy removing. Someone recommended Surrey Off-Road in Dunsfold on TLOC but they want £60 per hour + VAT and quoted about a day (few other minor things as well) which I thought was steep.

Graham
I did use them for my suspension lift and the end price was way higher than the quote, not a happy bunny.
Sorry I can't help with an alternative. _________________ Les

Hi Graham,
I had a similar experience when I got them to fit a long range fuel tank to my 80. End bill was three times the estimate.
What is up with your diff? Is it the diff or the lock actuator?

Cheers for that - it does seem to be the case with any specialistd 4x4 prep place that they charge the world. Ian - it's flashing and not engaging and that's about as far as my knowledge takes me! What you reckon? |

Very unlikely to be the diff itself that's failed then and shouldn't require diff removal. Could just be the indicator switch or it could be the actuator in which case you may want to talk to idrubie some more _________________ Jon m0zxj

Assumed it was the actuator but could be the switch. Any quick way for me to know Ian? And TJ Motors in Oxted has been mentioned to me |

Just to clarify, Jon is refering to the switch that tells the system the lock has gone in (and turns the flashing light solid) not the switch you use to activate the locker.
With the ignition on but the engine not running can you hear a noise from the rear of the car when you turn on the locker? You should hear an electic motor. If you can't it is likely to be the actuator that has gone.

The center diff will need to be locked i.e. solid light not flashing, before you'll get any action from the rear. How sure are you that the rear isn't working because they don't always engage as easily as you expect, the wheels need to be turning at different speeds for it to be able to engage. Simple test is to get the centre locked, turn the rear knob, jack both rear wheels off the ground, turn one back wheel, if the other wheel turns in the same direction it's locked, if it goes the oposite way it's not. _________________ Jon m0zxj

Have done the test that Ian said and I can hear some sort of electric engine type thing running for a few secs from the direction of the rear diff. So that's good and not the actuator then. Having trouble getting the car jacked so both rears are off the ground but think I can get hold of another hi-lift jack. Thx and update to follow |
