Dear all, thanks for all your previous help.
This one is proving quite a mystery story so please excuse the length of the post. Given the potential costs I've been quoted I'm really hoping for advice, experiences or considered thoughts from any of you prior to having to dip very deep into my pockets.
Apologies if this is not really a new topic but related to the injectors subject below....to be honest I'm just not sure if they're linked or not but happy to stand corrected.
Basically my diesel looses power / starts stuttering at 50 mph or so when climbing a hill or under heavy acceleration. Garage originally suggested MAF sensor ( see thread further below ) but when looking into it further diagnostic shows something to do with fuel pump / system? Having forked out £700 only last month for a wheel bearing ( again something I'm told I was unlucky to need replacing ) and a £600 service the month before I'm naturally nauseous at the thought of upwards of another £1000 bill for costly fuel system parts.......which havent even been narrowed down yet. The car has done 93K and otherwise been fine but with this potential expense I'm even thinking the previously unthinkable and getting shut ! I'd be devastated to see it go but with the timing blt being due in another 7K i cant see an end to the bills.....
As a starter for 10, the garage flushed the fuel system with an additive and changed the fuel and air filter. For the next 3 days, with the flush in the fuel, it ran absolutely perfectly - even when I deliberately pushed it quite hard as a test. Then last night I put half a tank of standard diesel in and, blow me, the stuttering started again this morning when doing the exact same journey. I was tempted to hit the bonnet with a tree branch ( aka Basil ) but the knowledge of the paint bill held me back.....
I just cant see how the new fuel ( other than diluting the flushing agent ) can have such an effect? Am I deluding myself to think that it still may be a fuel contaminant issue or am I looking down the barrel of a costly fuel system problem? Are such things common on early 120's? Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received...... |

Was the fuel filter also replaced and the fuel pipe in the tank checked for gunge? Sounds like starvation, but that's just a wild guess!
Hope it's an easy fix! _________________ I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.

I would agree about changing the fuel filter before touching anything else |

Might be worth speaking to a proper diesel specialist and see if they have knowledge of similar symptoms - I would try calling:
Bob at RVS in Swindon 01793 421166 - old school and very knowledgeable on the 80's stuff - may well have some ideas worth talking through.
Also just a comment £700 seems a tad rich for a wheel bearing, rebuilt my whole front axle including new inner and outer wheel bearings both sides, and new steering knuckle bearings for not too much more. As does £600 for a service.
I don't know if Julian at Overland Cruisers knows much about 120's - on 80's and 100's to quote someone else on here, he's probably forgotten more than most of us will ever discover about them. He might be worth a phone call too.
Best of luck in any case. _________________ HDJ80, BFG AT's, grooved discs, OME 850/860's |
