When you key the mike, do you get deflection on the SWR meter when in FWD?
Does your SWR meter double as a power meter?

Could also be that the other party does not hear / do not care.

The TX light is just an indication that the mike was keyed. It does not (necessarily) mean the radio is transmitting.

As you said I don't think the channels your radio works on are very popular in the UK so the chances of someone responding are pretty low. You really need someone else you know to go on the same channel for a test or get a different radio with the UK channels. From the few times I've scanned the CB frequencies I can say you're not missing much though!  Laughing
