|

Hello,
I am giving serious consideration to buying a ‘R’ Plate 1997 Amazon. I have not had before but prefer it to a Disco and can’t afford a decent RR.
I believe it is a type 80, with a 4.5ltr V8 petrol engine and a professionally installed and plated LPG underslung system.
I am not delusional and do not expect a concourse vehicle, I have arranged for a used vehicle check at Toyota, but would also appreciate any ‘hindsight’ from anyone who can tell me what to look for in particular.
Apparently the viscous fan is broken and has been replaced with an alternative. I will probably get a viscous fan put back in.
Other than that any comments, warnings etc.. are most welcome.
Many thanks,

I purchased a 1998 R reg ('97 build) 80 series last year although mine was a diesel.If yours is an 80 series it will be a straight 6 petrol engine,not a V8.The later 100 series came with a V8 of 4.7 litres.
These cars are VERY well made and can't think of any issues affecting the petrol models specifically but a good service history is essential.Check the front knuckle joints for wear (a clicking is obvious on full lock) but not the end of the world if worn as relatively easy to repair. Also if it's an auto check for correct and smooth changes.
Be critical of worn or damaged trim or body parts as these are very expensive to repair/replace.
Other members on this forum have experience of LPG systems so hopefully they will give you a few pointers.
Good luck! _________________ Phil

Compared to the Discovery, the only warning is that if specialists are difficult to find and OEM parts are expensive. If you're the DIY kind of guy, then the 80 is easy to work on (although I still have loads to learn). I do all my own lubes and oil changes, and other work when it arises... Toyota dealership hourly rates are high.
Make sure axle diff locks are working. If not, treat as bargaining point rather than reason not to buy. The 80 can rust around the rear side cargo windows. _________________ Frederick (London SW15)
