Do you get clouds of white smoke/steam when you start it at say a petrol station ? If so that is a good indicator of a cracked head and what year as the earlier models were prone to cracked heads. _________________ SWB Colorado KZJ90 1KZTE

Might be worth popping down to a garage and getting them to do a compression test on the cylinders and some can check if gas is getting into the system with a chemical dropper that changes colour if gas is there.
Hope all goes well chap ! _________________ SWB Colorado KZJ90 1KZTE

ive always sung toyotas praises. but its at times like this that you get a bit dissilusioned i take reel care of my prado but it seems they all seem to suffer with head problems. regardless of how you look after them a real weak point on a great motor _________________ 97 landcruiser prado tx limited

I ran mine for months with a cracked head and it worked fine - just needed toppuing up frequently. I had to be careful when towing though.
If you run the car 'light' you should be OK until better times.

hi boxa, i ran mine for over 500 miles with a knackered head with the caravan on the back(not through choice) and i just took the rad cap off when it was parked for a long time or over night(stops the cylinders filling up as much as there's not as much pressure). yes you seem to be right about poor quality heads on the earlier ones but i know that the pajero's/shoguns suffer from the same problem. what i say is that if you have one from new and say 130,000+ miles later and some 10-15 years old, then it doesn't seem that bad to me if it needs a replacement head.i had to do an engine rebuild on my 2002 transit(2 years ago) 120.000 miles, it cost £1000 in parts. _________________ "ANGEE" it needs hoovered out again |

yes i agree i could run it for a while but im just going to put it in my garage and pull it apart dont want the mrs cooking it up and making things worse plus it tends to push a lot of the coolant back into the expansion bottle resulting in low coolant in rad just got to bite the bullit and get stuck in _________________ 97 landcruiser prado tx limited

AM I mistaken or doesnt the toyota red have something in it that turns (yellow??) if contaminated with exhaust fumes - ie a cracked head. _________________ HDJ80, BFG AT's, grooved discs, OME 850/860's |
