Just for info on my 4.2 import 1991 vintage(good year),on the 1st of December I took off the cooling fan and viscous drive associated with it.Ive had no problems at all,the temp still only goes to 1/2 way but gets there quicker,it hasn`t overheated when sitting in traffic,it`s quieter, and I think had more mpg.It hasnt been very cold this winter in Devon.
Will let you know of any snags

Your playing with dynamite
The alloy head is the weakest point on a 1HZ motor.
If something cracks or burst and leaks coolant into the combustion chamber,it will shatter things due to the extremely high compression.
The fan will also help keep it cooler if something else fails in the cooling system.
Trusting an old temp gauge is not recomended either.
IMO its just not worth it for a few months of saving a few MPGs.
If you must persist ,fit an electric fan as a backup |

1991 would be a 1HD-T, don't think the 1HZ was fitted much after 1990 except for Australian Market.
Yep it's a Cast Iron Head on the 1HD-T and the 1HD-FT.
However I'd agree with Rosco that maybe you should fit an electric fan on the radiator - either a pusher type in front of the radiator or a puller type behind it. I think that not having a fan is probably OK for the odd short journey or off road jaunt however I wouldn't want to be without one all the time. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto
