Hi all.
I am having problems with my starter motor (I think).Sometimes when I go to it all i get is a click and the SM does not turn.now first i thought it was a flat battery but having ruled that out went on to clean all connections/earth points on the car. as the fault is intermittent i thought all was good after because she started perectly not turning slowly or anything.
good for a few days and then same again click click click. then all of a sudden up she fires.
now im going away next weekend and so time is short to solve this. a few questions if i can ?
1. how easy is it to remove starter?- it looks ok throught the wheel arch I assume ?
2. I suspect it may be the solenoid and not the motor, can i buy a solenoid seperate ? could i do this job myself?
3. can anyone suggest a supplier of either the solenoid or the starter itself ?
4. I have been quoted £179 for a brand new SM (NO EXCHANGE)
Does anyone have the part number/model number for the SM. have looked on the i-net for ages and found little (except here which is great !)
5.I suppose i could take it to an auto electrical specialist but been down that avenue before. pays ya money and because its intermittent all seems well then ust whaen i want to go away the problem will re appear!!!
Any advice how to go about this appreciated.Sorry for all the questions.
Hi again someone has said there is a relay somewhere around the footwell area that could cause the same kind of symptoms, does anyone know what this is? where it is ? and how much?

yeh was thinkin that havin read some stuff. the car has only done 120k and the starter externally looks like new as its obviously has spent most of its life in Japan. Even though it looks externally good are you suggesting its worth a look ?
how do I find the part number for the contacts or should i just take the starter(i removed it to be nosey) to a decent auto electrician near us to do the job. it looks pretty easy to do but need the part number as our local toyota dealer is a complete dead loss and will for sure want to sell me a new starter.
thanks for your reply its appreciated.
20 mins later...........
Well Well well have just had a look inside at the contacts and one side is worn almost to nothing less than 1mm the othe side is showing signs of wear but is not as bad. is uneven wear normal ? regardless it obviously is why I have been having problems.
