Im a bit late to this debate but I have just removed my BFG AT's as my 2002 90 series didnt handel as well or feel as planted with them as it did with the cheap Nexen's I bought it with. The Nexen's were very worn and had lots of hairline age cracks between the treads and on the side wall hence the change to new BFG's all round.

The BFG's also dont feel as grippy in the wet and I have found when 'pushing on' that I can quite easily induce a four wheel drift, that causes following motorists to back off...

I bought a 2002 Shogun on a whim last year and that was fitted with Yokohama Geolanders a great tyre that didnt drift and superior to the BFG's and Nexens. Ive sold the Shogun now it just was'nt as well put together as the Toyota.

I have just bought four Geolanders for my LC. Incidently even with the old Nexen's on compacted snow up a steep hill I had no loss of traction, I think the LC's four wheel drive is so good that tyre choice is probably less of an issue. I dont drive off road very often and I dont tow anything apart from the odd Focus and Galaxy out of ditches on icey days. So I dont need the more aggressive tread of the BFG's which I think are more for regular off road situations.
