I am considering an 80 series GX with approx 100k on the clock but without service history. The engine feels smooth and is smoke free. Asking price is £8-9k.

I am wondering how long these engines last for, given regular maintenance.

Are there any known problems with the turbo ?

Another example I drove recently had a green light that illuminated on the dashboard, and I think this was something to do with the turbo boost. Is this normal ?

It would seem to me that the 4.2 is more suited to an automatic gearbox, given its torque characteristics. Any comments on whether auto or manual is preferred would be appreciated.

What MPG could I expect at a steady 70mph cruise for auto v manual ?

What month / year did Toyota cease production of the 80 series ?

Many thanks,

4.2 engine is pretty reliable will last 300K miles plus with good maintenance. Turbo can fail if the oil is not kept in good condition but can also last for ever.

Green light will be the turbo bost light.

4.2 is good with the Auto but also with the manual. Manual has better economy, expect 29 to 30 mpg at 70 on a manual, 25 to 26 with an auto/

Personal choice is an Auto but it really is personal choice.
