hi
has anyone else had this problem. i have a N reg colorado (jap import)
when the automatic gear box changes up the gears sometimes the revs go up to 4 before it changes(usually changes just above 2) and sometimes when im driving along at 55-60 on a flat road it keeps changing up and down for no reason. the problem is intermitant

A colleugue of mine had the colorado, a 3.0 Diesel with an autobox. His use to do the same, but from what I remember, that was traced to a faulty Sports switch.
Usually the gearbox will change gear depending on the load (ie how hard you are pressing the accel/how heavy the trailer is), but the gearbox will change at a higher RPM when sports mode is selected (or PCS as Toyota call it).
Strange thing is (as with all Toyotas), the switch was around 80 quid, plus the labour for finding the fault! So be careful if you take it to a dealer.

I have a 97 Colorado and have had the problem. I got so fed up with the dealers claiming it needed a lot of money spent on it. I rang Toyota Customer Service and within 24 hours they had come back to me with the following:
"It's a well known problem. It's an ingress of water in either Switch 1 or Switch 2 on the Right hand side of the autobox" (looking from the front of the vehicle). I have now replaced both switches (around £35 each) and it's fixed the problem. I recommend that the connectors be filled with electricaql grease. Hope this helps |

I to have a 96 Prado that is sometimes late in changing gear.
I have looked for the 2 switches mentioned above but one seems to have 3 cables going into the gear box, (not the wires on the connector but 3 wires preventing you lifting the switch out of the hole going into the gear box)
Have I got the right switch? the slighly higher one lifts out after removing the fastening bolt. |
