What is the minimum depth of tyres you can have on two different tyres on the same axel as I have heard that if there is a big difference it could mess up the axels and transmisson ??????????????  Confused  Confused  Confused

I think the legal minimum depth is 1.6mm over 75% of the surface of the tyre. 3mm is my personal "safe" limit especially at this time of year.

Having 2 different size tyres on the same axle will cause your diff to work constantly, this builds up heat and wear on the diff, especially at higher loads. a minor difference won't be too bad (tyres rarely wear at exactly the same rate) but a larger difference will be bad for the diff. if you have an LSD in the back, the effect on the diff is far worse. If you go play in the mud, and use the rear locker, you'll find that you have far less traction as one wheel is working against the other.

At a guess I would say within 1mm of tread for the difference between the two. (personal feeling, not based on fact)

My Disco, and my mates X5, both require no more than 4mm difference.
