Have bought a '98 4.2 diesel auto. I'm experiencing hesitation when accelerating in overdrive. When travelling at 40-50mph on the overrun, the car appears to be freewheeling, as the revs drop to below 1,000 rpm. When I GENTLY press the accelerator, the torque convertor seems to take hold of the transmission and I can feel a distinct braking sensation, as the low revs hold the vehicle back. Further GENTLE pressure on the accelerator increases the engine revs and away she goes. In the same overrun situation, if I apply more than gentle pressure on the accelerator, the transmission comes in with a clunk. It feels as if there is a time lag between the transmission taking up the drive and the engine revs increasing. |

Sounds like the gearbox is not locking the torque converter`lock up`. At this sort of speed the engine revs should stay up with the road speed.
