I have just had the dreaded head crack on a 2L-TE 2.4litre engine. In fact there were 3 cracks found once the head came off.
I spoke to my local garage and was given a very open ended quote for replacing the head. Time and parts was looking like £2,000.00 +vat
I put a post on the club site looking for help and was given the following link as a place to look.
http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/members_pages/stevo/index.html
This is a link via the Toyota surf owners club to a company in Stockport called Engine Company Services Ltd who specializes in these types of engines, particularly on Surfs.
They do a modified replacement head with reconditioned cam, new valves, cam belt et al for £995 + VAT and can do it in one day by appointment with about a weeks notice.
They have been using these heads for about 3 years now and have had no reported problems with them to date.
I have just had the head replaced on my LJ78 by them and they appear to have done an excellent job. Very courteous and explained everything.
Since this is a problem with this type of engine I thought a post on the club web site about them would be a good idea.

I hope this is a help to anyone who has head problems.
