Hi guys,
I've joined the forum cos I'm thinking of getting an 80 series LC. I've previously had a Discovery which I really liked but the build quality let it down and in hind sight I could have picked a better one for the money.
Anyway...
I just wanted to see how you guys get on with yours for greenlaning and pay and play days - are you hampered by the sheer size of the LC?
I'm looking at the 'cruisers as they are well built, reliable and confortable - a mate of mine has recently bought a '92 or '93 import and it's great, but he wont let me try it out offroad!
What are the largest size tyres you can fit without a sus lift?
Any info/thoughts would be great.
Cheers,
Cal
(P.S. - wasn't sure if this is the right bit of the forum to put this kind of post on so hope it's in the right place!) |

Hi There,
Cant really comment about laning with a LC, but I too have recently moved over to LC from years with L/R's. All i would say is DO IT NOW !!
I bought a '95 GS model - doesnt have some of the luxuries of the VX but does have the 3 elctric diff locks. I have also just put on some BFG AT at 287/75 x 16 (approx 33.5") which are taller than std but required no suspension mods. You can go (a lot) taller but you would be into suspension and / or body lifts.
It is a big beast right enough - but when measured against my td5 Disco, it was only 2" or 3" longer, about the same width and not as high - wheelbase is approx 110" (same as l/r/110) - so looks can be deceptive.
It is certainly designed and built better than l/r - and feels it. The 4.2 td engine is reputed to last 500k miles and I can believe it.
Good luck

Nice one - thanks Jon.
My mate loves his - he uses it for towing his digger most days.
I think he's on 31 inch tyres but I will let him know the size you're using - I know he will be looking to get some bigger ones soon.
He's recently had his injector pump fail, but that's the only thing he's had to change since about September and we both reckon there wont be anything else for a while (fingers crossed anyway!).
Thanks for the info |

One more question - how are you getting on with the gearing after the bigger tyres were fitted? Does it still pull away OK?
Cheers. |

Hi Cal,
Hardly noticed the difference so far. The 4.2 td is a good torquey unit. I'm planning to put an intercooler kit on at some stage, which increases power and torque by approx 30% .
Cheers

Nice!!! 8)
I've been thinking more and more about what to get next - currently thinking it will be between a land cruiser or a hilux surf - the surfs are slightly smaller so a bit better for greenlaning, but I still love the 'cruisers.
Decision decisions...
Thanks again for the info. |
