Hi all,
I've been trying to investigate how to go about importing a Land Cruiser from, say, Gibraltar, to the UK. Doews anyone know which companies, if any, do this for you, or what the legislation is?
Just day-dreaming here - a UN spec 200 series 4.5 twin turbo D-4D for a lot less than the soft-roader available locally

If Gibraltar is within the EU (and that seems fairly likely) I would have thought that getting the car into the UK would be quite straight-forward. Remember the fad a few years ago when people would nip over to Belgium or France and buy new cars there and return with them to the UK. I don't know what paper-work was/is required but it didn't seem that there were any additional taxes etc.
The next question is whether the Toy folk in Gibraltar will sell a vehicle to an EU-buyer? It would appear that they'd be undercutting the official UK Toyota branch, which wouldn't go down too well.
My guess is that if you can actually purchase the car, the legalities and admin of getting it into the UK would not be too bad. Just my 2c though

That and the factory snorkel
I'll pop them a mail, with no hope of reply, and see what they say. They do both left and right hand drive, so no issues there. I don't think Mr T would have different safety components per market - too many assembly lines.
Hmmm...
'Dear Father Christmas
I've been such a good boy, all year long. Please can I have just one present this year - a new Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series 4500 V8 D-4D, white with a snorkel. You can get one from those lovely people in Gibraltar ...'
I can see where that'll get me Probably Valkenburg (Cape Town) ... _________________ I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.

was having a look at the interior of the 200. It is very basic compared to the UK 200. no bells or whistles. I suppose it's intended to do more than a Chelsea tractor....
Curious though, the engine specs: The AT diesel is more powerful than the manual. Why would they detune a manual?
Do let us know the price _________________ Cheers,

And they're offering a 3% discount on the 200s until the end of the year
Funnily enough, I see that their auto has a higher spec/tune V8 (same as SA spec but lower than UK version) than the manual, which has an even lower power version. Presume these lower tune engines are intended for use with poor quality fuel? Or maybe with greater reliability in mind?
Anyway, if they're nice and cheap, I'm sure there'll be more interest from the folk here
EDIT: I see we're on the same wave length re engine output, Crispin!

Decided to drop them a mail as a general enquiry, and got a pretty instant response (and I predict she's another saffer, with a name like that ... but maybe not ) :
Dear Gary,
Thank you very much for your e-mail.
Kindly note that we are the appointed distributor and official supplier
of Toyota vehicles to The United Nations, Non Government organisations
and Aid and Charity Organisations world-wide.
Under the terms of our agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation Japan, we
would need to obtain more information before we are able to supply a
price quotation. We would need :
1) Information on your Company Status and business operations
2) Consignee details and Consignee Status
3) If the vehicle is for a project, please state who it is financed by.
The above is required to establish whether or not your company falls
into the TGS scheme and complies with the rules imposed upon us by
Toyota Japan.
We trust you understand our position and we thank you for a prompt
response
Kind Regards
Desiree

Looks like Mr T has done his best to make sure getting around the local country branch is difficult....
Time to start your own charity then Luckily Africa is full of opportunities when it comes to charitable ideas!

Aha!
Perhaps you'd like a brand new Land Cruiser like mine?
New shape 78 series. I've got the 1HZ engine for reliability but the new 4.5V8 is available.
Twin 90 litre fuel tanks, front & rear locking diffs, snorkel - all factory fitted by Mr T.
Imported, taxed, on UK plates, £25000 +VAT
Insurance no problem, fully comp with Carole Nash for £500
Also available 79 series (pick up), 76 series (5 door), or the new 200 series.
You know you want one...

Just what I want
I'm seriously considering keeping my 90 for a couple more years and then getting a brand new 78 which should see me out and I can also leave it to one of my boys
I do tend to keep my vehicles for years anyway, had my Hilux for over ten years now and still love it. |
