Hello all,
I’m new here….
I just bought land cruiser 73 year 1985 3.4 diesel engine. This is my 3rd Toyota in the house (corolla verso and Yaris). I living in Germany and there is not so-much land cruiser (70 series) in general, so I needed to import this one from Holland.
For me to have this car is kind of dream that come true….('m 48 years old) It will be my "hobby" and I would like to work on it by myself…..the plan is to make it Oldtimer car.
The 1st thing that I decided is to change all the filters…. Air, fuel, oil.
Air - manage.
Fuel – I manage
Oil – I have two problems:
The 1st one is how I’m checking the level of the oil?
The other issue which oil I need to use? 10W40? 15W40 synthetic?
I will be happy for tip's note and devices
Many thanks,Ben. |

I'm not sure about that engine, but look at one of the online engine oil companies Like Opie Oils , would think semi synthetic and about 10 or 11 ltrs. _________________ It's Not a Bl**dy Jeep it's a Landcruiser

The precise Toyota model designation would help.
Roger.

Hi Ben. Im a 73 owner. Congratulations and welcome.
Agree with Andy and Roger about oil. There are plenty of 3B engines around, you should have no problem finding the right oil.
Bang the VIN in here and it should tell you what Toyota recommend.

As for checking oil level... is the dipstick missing?
The previous owner of my current 73 made use of a non toyota dipstick and ran the old engine with 3 litres too much oil.
I got round the non standard dipstick by changing the oil with the quantity as recommended in the engine manual and then dipped it and marked (scored with a hacksaw blade) the dipstick at the oil level shown.
Dont know if that helps. |

Hello all,
(sorry for late answering, during the week I don't have much time)
"The precise Toyota model designation would help".
the only thing that I now about the model is that it is BJ73 with 3.4 liter Diesel engine from 1985. (hardtop)
Many thanks for answering!

Ben
The vehicle identification number is stamped on an aluminium plate inside the engine compartment. It is also stamped on the chassis at the front of the vehicle viewable when you look at the chassis through the front wheel arch.
The numbers should match and will tell you the exact toyota vehicle designation |

Thats it. Enter it to jap parts website and it will give you a list of all parts and their toyota part numbers. iirc it gives oil spec and quantity |
