Hi all,

Wits end here. Bought a 96 Prado in May this year and just about bought it again now. Replaced brakes, exhaust, seals and flanges on transfer box, wheel nuts and now it looks like the heads blown. What's the value to a breaker/fixer on here? Has 3 brand new BF Good rich KO2s, really decent, low-rust chassis, working transfer box and autobox, start and drives well just uses a lot of coolant. Looking to recover some money so I can replace with something I don't need a 2nd mortgage for. Two mechanical failures in a year is too much for me to suck up.

Low mileage, really nice condition underneath, generally sound in many ways. No less than a grand as a new head and it'll probably run on for another 300 000km so if someone has the know-how.

Any guide price appreciated as it'll determine whether it's worth replacing the entire cooling system and head for around £1500.

Cheers

What makes you think the head/gasket has gone. If the rad. cap fails it will us/loose a lot of coolant. Replace it with a GENUINE Toyota cap.

Always a very difficult/tricky question to answer on these types of "specialist" vehicles - due to numerous factors like age, mileage, vehicle condition, service history, mods etc. If you have a look at online car sale sites, a vehicle of your vintage ranges from £2500 to £5500, which just goes to show what I mean.

IMHO, I think you will be hard pressed to find a replacement LC for £1500 (assuming this is what you want), so if I were you, I would be tempted to spend the £1500 and get it sorted out; the old adage "better the devil you know" comes to mind.

Been over the head gasket issues with my mechanic; there's an external coolant leak from around the engine temp sensor area, steam and smoke through the exhaust when pushed, massive loss of coolant (1 l from a 40 min drive; minimal if not warmed up completely I.e. 15 min drive). Rad is spitting coolant when filled directly, understand this is an indicator of head pressurisation. Not really misfiring on startup but have to wait longer on the glow plugs now. Few other indicators I've forgotten about probably. Pretty sure it's the head.

Also affected gearbox initially 2 weeks ago; motorway driving and wouldn't transfer to top gear. Discussed with a gearbox specialist as it didn't throw up code. He said it drops gear to reduce load on the engine when overheating.

Basically I've bought this truck twice with these issues in the first six months and I don't have the money to be spending over £4K a year in maintenance on it. Love the truck to bits but what happens when I have to replace both front brake assemblies and get it undersealed for winter to top up the existing under seal? Way too expensive IMO and I'd be better off with a Yaris...

Basically, what are people paying for a truck in this condition? Rough guide please?

Fixed, phew! Leaky engine temp sensor on the head causing all sorts of problems. Glad it wasn't the head. Anywho, no longer for sale. Maybe a mod should remove this post?
