Heyup fellas. Not been on in a while, but as the thread turned into EGR stuff thought I would just give you my thoughts for what they are worth..
I removed the EGR system three years ago on my 97 Collie. At the same time I removed the large butterfly and turned up fuelling in the spill valve, only to the point where it showed just a little black smoke when the throttle was blipped. I found these mods made a huge difference. The throttle response was sharper and the motor seemed to rev so much easier. I was worried that economy my suffer with the spill valve issue but I haven’t noticed any difference. There is no issue either with the shut down. Read on here it would be uneven, but turns off with the key evenly just the same. Regularly tow a stock trailer over weight and work the old girl hard, noticed on oil changes the oil is far cleaner post EGR valve removal.
The truck definitely runs smoother and is far more responsive after these, well worth the time and effort.
Just a side note, having recently purchased another farm, this truck got parked up for just over three years. I use a hilux and an amazon so I hadn’t got the time to put the collie through it’s MOT, so it remained parked up in the yard. Batteries put on a trickle charger and already to go, I went and put them on last week. Guys telling me it would never start. It wouldn’t run again etc etc.
It started on the key instantly. Couldn’t believe it. Change of timing belt, fluids and filters and away to go.
Couldn’t believe it. Completely covered in green moss. What an amazing truck Toyota build. |

Great story of reliability of these amazing trucks. It echoes my own experience. I only now routinely use the car once a month or so and it shows no signs of suffering from this (relative) neglect. I have blanked off the EGR on mine, but must admit that I got cold feet when it comes to removing the butterfly... Maybe I should think again. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |
