When putting the LC into drive i get a loud clunk and a lurch forward even with my foot hard on the brake, it doesnt happen at all in reverse and it drives perfectly well, I've taken it to my local garage who have always worked on it (and i trust) and the diagnosis is a transfer box with lots of play in it, the rest of the drive line is fine..... the fix...... exchange transfer box......... price around £600 but i will findout the full damage next week when the work starts  Shocked

Update and advice needed please, after discussing the matter with a mate he doesnt think that the transfer box is faulty and thinks it maybe the prop shaft? he reasons that theres no oil on the floor therefore its not the tranfer box so i havent taken it to the garage yet as i dont want to buy parts i dont need until i'm sure........ any sugestion or advice would be most welcome as i'm going to tow me carvan some distance in two weeks  Shocked

It's easy to check the prop shafts physically, did your mate do this? if any doubt undo the things and check all the universal joints are free moving and unworn and that the sliding spines are free moving, hopefully you grease them up now and again anyway...you can get a thump from the transmission if the sliding spines run dry (i understand this is usually noticed by a thump a few seconds after you come to a halt but still in Drive), but don't overgrease them enough to pressurise them either.

Have you done the obvious first things, that is to check the oil levels of gearbox and transfer box and front diff and had a feel and basic sniff test of the oil condition of all, i would have thought your trusted garage wouldn't be far out with their diagnosis anyway.
Why would there be oil leaking anyway, it could be worn out but no reason at why it should leak oil.

Another thought here Wooly and one you may not like but feel i should mention.

Doubly important to check that transmission oil, because in rare cases the bottom of the combined radiator can split allowing coolant into the transmission cooler and thence into the gearbox.
If you haven't already done so it might be prudent to drop a sumpful of gearbox oil and see what the condition is like.

Admittedly this is a rare thing, more common on 90 series but not unheard of on the 120's, and i have not personally seen what transmission oil looks like when mixed with coolant, so might be an idea to do some reasearch so you know exactly what colour/texture/smells you are looking for in that sumpful....roughly 3.5 litres in the 5 speed will come out, near enough 5 litres on the 4 speed if my memory serves.
If you haven't had the transmssion oil changed it certainly won't do the box any harm to have some fresh oil inside anyway.

Not trying to worry you by the way, just mentioning in case, and seeing as the vehicle is going up on ramps or a lifter for the diagnosed work an ideal time to change the box oil too.

If its the 5 speed it requires WS (world standard) full synthetic oil, some people insist on using Mr T's own brand but its actually Dexron 6, i bought Exo'sl Dexron 6 (covers WS standard) when i changed the gearbox oil and the box is lovely on mine, 20 litre drum around £70, but you will need some sort of oil pump/syringe to replace the oil because the filler point on the 5 speed is half way up the side of the box, 24mm bolt marked WS and impossible to feed in from above or via standard 1 litre bottles.
2 bolts on the sump, one is the drain plug, the other is the level plug, oil must be around 46' (check cos my memory) for level checking.

4 speed box is much easier for oil change/checking, still has a dipstick and the dipstick tube doubles as a filler point, so as simple as an engine oil change....IIRC it dexron 4 in this box but double check.

I wish there was an edit button here.
That WS Dexron 6 oil i mentioned is EXOL (not Exo'sl), not suggesting its any better than anyone else's but i use a lot of their oils (widely used in commercial vehicles) and have had no issues.

Wooly, i'd hook that dipstick out and see what the oil looks like, if it's simply a bit dirty that's one thing but if it's got any sort of gunge in there, i'd stop driving it completely until it's been in for pro diagnosis.

Certainly now the gearbox itself is playing up a gearbox it sounds to be an oil change is on the cards, or at least the sump should be drained so the oil can be analysed properly.

Oh hell Wooly, you don't mean coolant in the transmission?
I'd rather not be right about that one mate to be honest.

Just a quick update, i took the car to the Automatic gearbox specialist in Preston today, the box gets taken apart on friday but a quick assessment revealed the box cant change into 5th gear because the holding clutch is slipping and the clunk when it goes into gear is possibly the gearbox mounts because they are both split. As said i will know more tomorrow when the box comes out. Very impressed with the garage though  Very Happy
