Hi Guys

First time poster, long time reader from this great site

i have a problem with my 2003 Land cruiser 90. the brakes have been acting funny for a while now. the problem is that when I'm using the brake pedal it will work fine for 1 or 2 normal uses  during traffic etc, but on the third or fourth press, it suddenly drops to the floor as im driving before it brakes. i give it one pump and its back to a normal feel again until the next cycle of 3  or 4 uses later. this process repeats a lot

the brake master cylinder was replaced by a local garage a few years ago with the car only doing approx 5k since then. this didn't really make a difference. i replaced all the fluid to rule that out. I've bleed all 4 corners and also the LSV, no bubbles came out

my next thinking is to check the brake calliper sliding pins on each corner to make sure they are not sticking. i have no ABS warning lights on the dash and when i checked the ABS on wet grass or snow, it works just fine

the only thing i did notice was that last night i turned the engine off, pressed the pedal until hard and kept my foot on it. i could feel it dropping to the floor in stages, until it did drop to the floor after a min or two. could the master cylinder that was replaced a while ago still be the cause? or not bleed properly. its not my first time to get a new part only to find out its a dud part and had to bring it back to the dealers for another one

i also rang a main dealer and the guys on the phone just said new brake callipers are needed, this without even looking at the car...... nice i thought

any help or input would be great

thanks

Hi

just an update

checked all brake pipes/ hoses - no leaks

checked all the callipers and they are ok, sliding pins in good condition and even ware on all pads

I'm going to replace the master cylinder again with genuine Toyota one this time

What about the ABS pump, can the internal seals be reconditioned? the pump itself looks in good condition with no rust etc

thanks for the link above also

Mine does it and I've had the same thing on a few Toyotas I've MOTd, even cars. The way to check if there's a fault with the hydraulic system is to switch the engine off and pump the brakes up hard and hold the pedal down, there should be no movement once full pressure is built up.

Air still in system (has to be first port of call....) is it jacked up/modified brake pipes?

I know from bleeding mine, you have to be very logical and put a LOT more fluid through to purge the air from pipes than you think!!! - I would get an easy bleed on it, and run loads of fluid through to each caliper!
