Salutary lesson learned when changing Oil and Oil Filter this weekend

Before yesterday, I have performed several Oil Filter changes without issue; but be aware of what can go wrong

I had removed the old oil filter, but had not checked the face of the oil filter housing

I then put the new oil filter on and tightened down in the normal way

Re-filled with fresh oil and to my horror saw oil spewing forth from the oil filter housing

What had happened was the ''o'' ring from the old oil filter had become detached from the old oil filter itself and was resting
on the housing (was not particularly visible due to oil deposits from old filter) , thereby preventing the new filter from gaining a proper seal to the face of the housing - effectively there were two 'o' rings causing sufficient gap between the new filter and the filter housing - hence the leak

Next time I will take the trouble to remove the Air filter housing to gain proper sight of oil filter housing for a thorough visual inspection

Fortunately only downside was the cost of the replacement New Oil and a bag of sand to clean up - plus lack of use of the truck for 12 hours

Hope this helps and doesn,t happen to anyone else

Cheers All

Very Happy
Guaranteed more than a few of us just missed disaster by noticing old o ring stuck in place just prior to installing
new canister Wink

Thus always removing air filter box from then on.

Spraying the mounting area/drain with your preferred cleaner (brake cleaner works well) and wiping excess off
ensures a good seal.
