|

Hi guys I have a problem with my 1997 SWB Colorado. I have a clunking noise that sounds to me like its coming from near the front offside wheel. Its a clunk like something is shifting. No noise on pot holes or speed humps. And not all the time. Worse on certain roads like its affected by road camber. Just passed MOT. Asked mechanic to look but couldn't find anything. I have been under and exhaust is secure as are, as far as I can tell gearbox and transfer. The bushes look a little perished in the wishbones. Anybody had the same or suggest a process of elimination they would use please. It's beginning to bug me

The single most common reason for mysterious clunks is the anti-roll bar links, their ball joints and bushes. That would be my first check. Second would be the bushes that connect the anti roll bar to the chassis. Out of interest I have recently found the reason for a similar mysterious clunk, which turned out to be the dust shield behind the brake disc was loose (but it wouldn't be the first thing I checked in your case!). _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |

There are of course loads of things it could be, but the fact that it's just passed an MOT hopefully rules out things like bottom ball joint failure which is a known thing on these or major things like snapped rear control arm turrets. THe ARB is one thing that could pass an MOT but still be worn enough to make a racket. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |

Thanks Diggerdave. Your post reminded me that I had the nearside roll bar link shear a couple of years ago and I replaced just that one. So I have ordered another and will replace the offside now. It must surely be the prime candidate. Thanks for your help |
