Hi,

My 90 LWB D4D wont shift from 1st into 2nd. There is an engine warning light and a transmission specialist has diagnosed it as a bad solenoid and quoted £800 to fix it.

Is the solenoid easy to replace myself?

I have done the ATF filter myself several times - the solenoids are accessed there aren't they?

So I am wondering:

What are the potential risk - what can go wrong - what will break when I take it to bits?

How do I identify which is the correct solenoid to replace?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi
I Have also done the filter change.

If the solonoid is easy to get to ... £800 seems a bit over priced.

Sorry I don't know enough about it... good luck

Hi,
You can check the diagnosis of tge specialist checking the engine codes, you basically need to connect two pins in the diagnostic port and count the flashes on the dash. If you Google Prado paper clip diagnostics you can see a video on how to do it.
The transmission should have 3 solenoids from what I remember, the code should tell you which one is faulty as they have different fault codes for each solenoid. If it really is just one solenoid 800£ sounds very steep.

Colin, ask them what they intend to do, and is the work guaranteed ?
£800 is a lot of dosh, but rather than replace one, they may want to replace all 3, thereby making work/ money for themselves.
I can see some logic in replacing all 3, sort of, whereby if 1 is failing replace the lot ?? Possibly.?
Factor into that price they should change oil and filter at the same time.
You could check the price of the solonoids, oil and filter from suppliers, and deduct that from the £800, to give you a rough idea of labour
and rough idea if 1 or 3 are on the cards, before you ask.
Is that price including vat ?
Sorry can't help more.
