I have just bought an Amazon 97 R reg 4.2 TD 24 valve manual, absolutely love it but it has a problem on acceleration between 1600 and 2000 revs. It seems to be holding back and when I push my foot down on the accelerator it surges and then holds back and surges etc until the turbo cuts in at around 2000 revs. Anybody have any ideas as to where to start looking to solve this problem please? |

Check fuel filters and air filters (fuel mainly - sounds like fuel pressure). Also, depending on mileage, it could be injectors. What is the mileage? Has it towed? Service history?
From my experience, change the fuel, oil and air filters every 4500 miles, and have injectors flow checked at 60k (when the Cam belt is due) and changed at 100k. These engines are bullet proof... but they need to be maintained to keep the performance.
Let me know the condition.

Thanks for you reply. The vehicle has done 98,000 miles. I have only had the vehicle for 2 months and as soon as I bought it I had a service done where all the filters and oils were changed. I also had the cam belt done because not knowing the history I thought it better to play safe. I don't know how much towing it has done, but it has got a towbar indicating that it has done some. Didn't get a full service history with it. It looks as if it was maintained well in its first 5 years (I am only the 3rd owner). Your advice is much appreciated and I think the first thing to do is to have the injectors checked/changed. I fully agree, these engines are suberb but need good maintenance.

Alison,
One thing I forgot to ask. Does the engine have enough power when the turbo is working? Does it smoke at all? Do you hear a clean turbo whistle (not excessive noise, just a nice clean whistle)?
These engines also recirculate some of the exhaust gases back through the air intake after the turbo compressor. These look like small actuators (there are two of them on the right hand side of the engine (opposite side of the engine to the injector pump) that sit on the exhaust outlet. These are controlled by two small solenoid valves which open air valves which inturn operate these recirc valves. At low RPM, these valves should be closed, but at higher RPM they open to recirc some of the exhaust gases. Check that the actuators are not stuck in the open position.
I would also check the air intake is not blocked and that the filter is clean enough.

The 2 solenoids are E.G.R.(exhaust gas recirculation)actuators which recirc some exhaust back into the inlet manifold in various amounts from full at tickover to shut at full throtle They are designed to reduce oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust
as an emission control measure.Stopping them working will not hurt the engine in any way and may even help performance and economy by increasing the efficiency of combustion because of nil exhaust gas trying to be burnt twice. _________________ BIODIESEL..Veg My Ride |

The turbo works absolutely ok, no smoking, and the power is fine once it gets passed the 2000 revs mark. I did take it to a diesel diagnostics place and they suggested that it could be the turbo compressor you mentioned. They suggested I disconnected the pipes and see how I got on. I did this and it made no difference to the lumpyness but now the vehicle is much more responsive in every gear which I like! (as mentioned by Plug) so I was impressed with that. But as to the cause of the lumpiness they had no idea! So its back to trial and error. The air filter was cleaned out when I had it serviced so I think I may go for the injector problem. The other thing I wondered if you had any information on was the diagnosics point on the bulkhead - is that for the Toyota mechanics to plug a diagnostics machine into to test that everything is working OK? and if so, would that diagnose what may be wrong with my car?

Hello Alison,
Whenever I take mine into Toyota, they always plug into a port in the engine bay. This allows them to see exact pressures and temperatures around the engine, and will also show any error logs from the engine management. From what I am aware, only Toyota/Lexus can do this, and although they will charge you for an hours labour, it may be worth taking it into them so at least you can get a health check on the engine.
Personally, if it was the turbo compressor you would have less or little power from the engine (and it would smoke a lot). I would take it to Toyota, let them plug in the diagnostics to see if there is anything obvious. Another option is taking it to diesel injection specialist.
So, as long as the air intake is clear - fuel pressure and injectors is the next thing to look at.
