does anyone know if a rear axle off an 80 will fit onto a 70 and does the 80 have disc brakes on the rear?

Don't know if it will fit, yes ventilated discs, with the handbrake working on the inside of the disc bell.

The main problems with fitting the 80 series rear axle to a 70 series are
a) axle ratios  3.727 inthe 80 and 4.3 in the 70 and
b) width, the track on the 80 is 62.2 " with the 70 being narrower at 57.5"

Whilst on the subject, I am looking for a rear axle from a 73 series as I believe this model has rear disc brakes ?

Heavy duty or light duty 73 series? The HD didnt get discs until about 95.
Very little improvement in stopping power over the old drum brakes and the handbrake is *beep* on the disc set up

Disc brakes dont suffer so much from dirt and water as do drum brakes. I would scrap the handbrake setup and modify a disc brake setup fitted on the output of the transfer box. They are made in the U.K. for Land Rovers (puke puke ) but it wont be difficult to modify.
