to tell you the truth robert i know the feeling of what happens if it suddenly cuts out ..mine sems to do it if i boot it a bit sharply to get into traffic after i have started it from cold and driven off for about a quarter to half mile without warming up the engine ,  come up to a roundabout or junction after stopping and sticking the clog down to get accross a bit sharpish  when just straightening up it dies on me and stalls all lights on ect
knocking into neutral and restarting to get going again is fine and it don't happen again when the engine warms up
seems to me therefore the atomization of diesel fuel is incorrect ..not a fine enough mixture of air and fuel hence the glow plug check i must insist on next  service

yours  is similar i suspect

my LC can be running for a couple of hours then when you least expect it, it cuts out, the last few times it has restarted again. the last time she cut out i left it for about an hour, as she was turning over but would not start. Evil or Very Mad  Ilove the LC when she works but this is driving me mad. sat on my driveway is £13000 worth of junk, not worth a penny.

Have you tested for a vacuum lock in the tank.

Had a similar problem on a transit once and it turned out to be a blocked breather in the fuel cap.

When driving the pump would draw fuel until the vacuum over came the pumps ability to draw fuel.

Next time it happens, undo ther cap and see if you get a rush of air into the tank, if not, its not that.

regards
Lawrence

Got landcruiser back last week. alot has happened since it went in for repair, the garage tested and tested again everything. still no fault codes but they suspected that the pump was playing up. they sent LC to a specialist who confirmed that the pump was at fault. they have replaced worn parts and rebuilt the pump at a cost of £alot. not much change out of 2400 GB pounds. the car runs as sweet as a nut now. the next big expence in my life is that back in march my wife decided to leave after 23 years with me and now wants half of everything we owned. she dose not want half of our debt though, that all seems to be mine. Confused

Laughing for those interested the Landcruiser has now been running for 2 years, covered about 16k miles and never missed a beat. it seems it was the injector pump after all.
Divorce all settled, will have to work now until i am about 80 as I am skint but have a great motor. I Just stuggle to run it these days.

I Just joined this sight purely so I could respond to this thread. I bought an amazon back in August, my dream car, a 4.2l diesel vx. I have has the same problem. It will drive fine for miles on end then all of a sudden just cut out, as if you have turned the key off, can be quite dangerous. i havent driven it for a while and am arranging to take it to my mechanic to run through the computer- but having read this thread am a bit concerned!! Any advice appreciated.

Mine is a diesel try the following its quick and cheap to check and it caused me a couple of months of breakdowns;-

Try the grey plug with a red wire and a green wire at the spill valve at the fuel injection pump
The terminals at the plug can open up causing  the cicuit to make and break
Inside of the plug will look burnt / heated

I had this problem with my own vehicle and Toyota couldn't find the fault but someone on here suggested this and since replacing the connector 5 months ago I've never had a reoccurance, the vehicle would always restart after cooling down.

Toyota in Queensferry, North Wales charged me £89.00 plus VAT after me giving them the above info.

I know the OP had the injector pump replaced and it was fixed ,but I dont believe it was the pump. Fuel injection pumps die slowly losing pressure until you can no longer bear it.
I think it was something electrical attached to the pump.

Hi All,
I had the same problem engine cutting sporadically. Sometimes restarting sometimes not.
Toyota put it on their diagnostic machine and it registered as having no problems.
They then went on to say I need a new fuel pump even though their machine had said there was no problem.

Eventually it was sorted.

It was a bad electrical connection at the fuel pump.
We sourced it when the engine was running by wiggling the wires from the fuel filter down towards the fuel pump, the engine stopped and caught again and that way we figured out which connection it was.

Hope this helps.

For those interested, the LC has been running for the last 7 years with out any problems, starts first time and still runs like a dream. I have a problem with an engine management light that comes on now and again. usually comes on if I stop the LC with the A/C left on, when I re start I have a warning light that stays on. The remedy the garage gave me was to disconnect both batteries for a couple of minuets then re connect. they said they could find no fault. other news is that I am to get married again, if this last as long as the last one i will be well into my 70's
