Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
Failed the MOT today, with a near useless handbrake, and cracked rear discs!
Got new discs and a set of handbrake shoes on order, but is there anything I need to know about changing them?
Done plenty of brakes before, so know what I'm doing, just wondering if there's anything specific with the Colorado brakes?
Cheers!! |

I'm between Landcruisers at the second. Currently looking for 3 door. When I had my Col, I had the same problems with the handbrake. The crank pivots on a spigot. It's not the best of designs really given the crud that gets in there.. The crank and spigot had corroded and worn so much that all of the cable movement was taken up with 'slop' and the pads never actually moved! Don't remember discs being a problem to get off or anything else tricky. Again from memory, the inside of the disc is the handrake 'drum'. Eveything has to be freed off on the brake to allow the disc to come off.
If there is corrosion on the spigot ect, it may be possible to bush it all somehow. Simply can't remember if it was an easily replaceable part.

Thanks for that..
Actually replaced the discs the other day. Like you said, nice and easy to get them off. Nothing special to worry about.
I didn't end up changing the handbrake shoes. It was fairly obvious that the reason the handbrake wasn't working was simply that it hadn't been adjusted properly on the manual adjuster at the bottom of the shoes.
Must admit, I'm a bit surprised there's a MANUAL adjuster on it, but, hey, now I know I can keep it adjusted properly..
