What is the Most miles out of a tank that some one has got.

I am load up with about 300kg in the back, I clipped out the rear'est most seats, and I am up to about 525 miles, and the needle sits half way between quarter and empty.

Manual or Auto?

I managed about 550 on a full tank, when I filled up I still had about 5 liters left in there. From memory it worked out at about 31 point something per gallon. Mine was a 55 plate auto. Once it was run in - I got a very reliable 28-30 regardless of how I drove it.

So I am auto.

Mine is in the right field as far as consumption go's then.

So with 525 under the belt and perhaps 2 gallon, or 8 ~ 10 liters  in the bank, I would at the end of the day, be looking for about 575 or there abouts?

For a biggish, vehicle, I am rather pleased.

Too right. I reckoned that once the light came on steady there was about 10 liters left in the tank. My current Colorado has the same. I drained the tank and filled it slowly until the light went off. 10 liters.

Also from memory, I seem to remember that the stated capacity of the tank was dubious. This doesn't matter if you measure full to full, but I do recall filling it and thinking that the tank took more from completely empty to full. Maybe the neck doesn't constitute 'capacity'.

Hi Everyone,

Looking at your posts on forum and i think i have a problem.  I get on average 350 miles to a tankful, your responses have confirmed my suspicions!

i once managed to get 400 from a tankful sitting at 65mph on motorway for the whole time, but this is still nowhere near your figures.

If anyone else wants to add their figures, we can get a good comparison going. My vehicle is a 54plate LC5.

Adam,

Quick thing to check is your tyre pressures, make sure they are at the recommended pressures or even a few pounds over. This can make a big difference to MPG.

What does your 350 miles on a tanks work out at in MPG's?

Hi Oliver,

Tyre pressures are 3psi over standard, but have also tried standard.

MPG shamefully works out at 22 or under!

Adam, I feel for you.

Especially with the fuel price the way it is.

Is your engine all serviced up, no slip in the box?

I was told that by changing up the tyres from 256 series to 70 series, so by all accounts if I had kept to the original 265 series, then I am lead to believe the fuel economy would have been better than it was.

Well, thats just other peoples judjements.

Hope you find out why your economy isn't what it could be.

Hi UK Vette,

No slip that is noticed, it is an auto so dont think that would matter (Have experience of lots of cars, but always manuals!)

Have some other symptoms that may be helpful / coincidental

Top end rattling at low revs / under load

Cutting out occaisionally about 10 seconds after starting car (Most annoying as it stops in middle of road outside house!)
It then wont start again for a minute or so - which seems like a lifetime!
Engine just spins over and will not fire

No smoke when booted - most oil burners seem to throw a cloud of black soot out the back when throttle is pressed hard, mine doesn't and now paranoid

Possible ticking of EGR valve, although maybe i am getting increasingly paranoid

Overall a great car, but given fuel prices i will be buying a citroen C1 if this continues, would buy a prius but it has a toyota badge and they are not the most helpful in my experience so far.

Thinking something must be wrong (Im a clever cookie this morning!)

Thoughts are possibly that temp sensor could be faulty, car always running cold
MAP sensor or Airflow Meter not right, always getting fueling wrong.

One thing i dont know is whether the power is the same as other LC120s, as i can only afford one, but it would be nice to have a spare!

If anyone else has one in Gloucester or surrounding area and wouldnt mind comparing under bonnet equipment (So to speak) , that would be great!

Is it possible to ask your local Toyota to re-flash the ecu?

they wipe out the memory, and re-load, some times with updated software.

The next few time you start to drive, the ecu will "self adapt" to your driving style.

So for the first few times you drive it, drive it very gently, so it learns a "gentle driver" is driving

Hi Graham,

My local toyota garage are not very helpful.  They seem to have been the the "Computer Says No" school.

They will flash my ecu, but they have told me that unless there is a fault light on all the time, they will probably not be able to help.

I am trying to get hold of the lc120 workshop manuals so i can start pinning out sensors to try and fault find myself.

The other thing i may look at is a fault code reader of some kind to give me some idea of what is going on.

I really need to find a good diesel specialist who understands diesels more than a toyota garage and their computer generated responses.

Just back from a trip with mine, never done the miles to a tank before ( always fill up somewhere between 1/2 and 1/4 full, about 350 miles ) but solo at 80 mph with cruise on for 101 miles I got 29.34 mpg, and towing the caravan 1 1/2 tonne at 65 with cruise I got 22.4 mpg, so i'm well pleased

Now im gutted.  Sat at 65mph on cruise control for 200 miles only got 22mpg!

Anyone know a good scrap merchant?

Hey, don't give up, I've had 29mpg out of my 4.2 80 series.

There must be something that's not quite right with yours. I'm no expert on the engine side, but there are some other things you can check:

Tyre pressures - you've checked and OK.
Tyres - are they road or mud biased?
Brakes1 - does the car roll easily?  I can push my 80, just about, but on even the slightest incline it will roll with the hand brake off, it's really smooth, no brake binding of any sort.
Brekes2 - Are you heavy on the brakes? Momentum is king for MPG, planning ahead allows you to keep your momentum.
Windows - do you drive with all the Windows open? This will Kill your MPG at any reasonable speed.
Aircon - on/off have you seen if there is a difference with the aircon off?

The only other thing that I can think of is the Diesel pump over fueling, but I assume this would be noticable with black smoke under acceleration etc.

I'm sure others have ideas on the engine side of things though - come on guys, lets get him up to at least 25mpg!

have been through the basics, get 2 mpg more if i sit at 65 instead of 85, so no difference there.  Use cruise control on long runs, so minimum possble acceleration to maintain speed.  Tyre pressures 3psi over standard, good road tyres and brakes not binding.  (Just serviced whole braking system)

Windows closed and no difference between summer and winter.  (AC on or off)

Strange things that happen

1.  Once a month or so, car cuts out just after starting, wont start of a minute or so, then runs fine.
2.  Top end rattle noise, as discribed on here by others. - Not noisy injector noise, have that too!
3.  Ticking noise from engine bay when ignition on but engine not running
4.  No black smoke when car is booted, unlike most diesels on road. Even when towing

I have had the car for just over a year, it has always been the same.  Not too sure if it has enough poke, sometimes feel it lacks torque.
Car gets oil and filter set every 5000miles religiously.  Has now done 55000 of which 30,000 miles are mine in 15months.

My thoughts are underfueling, mix is never right, so running at less than optimim efficiency.
Either could be something to do with fuelpump timing (If this is required on 120s)  possibly a sensor problem, ecu being a muppet or i just have a friday tonkatoy!

Any help gratefully received and if anyone is near gloucester, am around if you want a look / go for a blast up local green lanes.
