Graham.

Use Google Earth, take a laptop and upload your position when you get to an internet Cafe. All you need is a GPS and a program to store your route.

Great idea, but easier said than done.
My favourite internet cafe in Lalibela, Ethiopia had 7 pc's, connected to a 14kb line....
In Addis, it is much better - 56kb line....
It you try open google earth there you will never finish a trip across Africa.  Very Happy

The sad thing for this gadget, is it covers pretty much the same areas as have decent mobile coverage.

The google earth thing can be fudged - set the cache to 2Gb (thats the max, and then fly your intended route when you have a good connection. I'm gonna try use different caches - will let you know if it works...
